  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

That's not a ring light. THIS is a ring light: Roger Deakins and Blade Runner 2049

I thought I knew what ring lighting was. Well, I underestimated how big they could get and what you could use them for.

"Roger achieved most of the look in-camera." That's what I would want to achieve, personally. The colorist's job should be, IMHO, to correct and homogenize. FWIW, I'm fully aware that this task alone is not a trivial one.

Shout out to OG RedUser Evin Grant who built something similar (though smaller ;-) - bare bulbs on a custom frame - for a music video we shot 10 years ago. I'm a huge fan of lighting schemes that use unique sources to foster a special "feel" to a scene/character.

If you liked it, then you should have put a ring on it:

But really, 256 fesnels? That’s just showing off. :drool5:

Don't forget the 100x Arri Sky Panel setup...lol. So ridiculously awesome!

What's the minimum number of lights that you need that would minimize shadows? I mean, the huge chandelier (Ulf says it's not a ring light, and he might be correct!) is equivalent to a softbox in some way, right? It's just that the quality of light is more specular rather than diffuse.
