  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thanks to Red something started...

Just think, if it weren't for RED, we'd still be paying 80k for pro-level video cameras, not even mentioning 4k.

Thanks Jim and Team

Thanks to Red something started...other companies started to do something.

I know, I know....but here is something I really like, and it is affordable (for an independent guy like me with not a big wallet to buy a Scarlet):

Thanks Jim and company!

I don't understand your having 10K in your wallet waiting for that camera but not renting a Scarlet to shoot today...

Seems like a nice 4K camcorder for a Sony first generation product and certainly better than JVC's which is half the price with smaller sensor,
but it's too closely priced to the Red Scarlet-X when you factor in lenses and their future unproven RAW recording option.

Sign me up for one when Soderbergh, David Fincher, Peter Jackson, Ridley Scott and James Cameron start using them
instead of Red...

The thing is - FS700 is still going to be a video camera with codec compression inside the camera, no RAW.

This is a big deal.

Yes, thanks to Red, Sony offers this cam for this price.

I want to buy a cam, not rent.

Of course everybody understand the value of Raw process. But some few guys cannot pay it. And I am not totally frustrated with such video quality.

And yes, I am not in the same league as James Cameron, Peter Jackson, etc. Fortunately the zoo of God is quite big. So I don't feel alone.

4K RAW output via 3G-SDI coming in a firmware update later, says Sony.

I think the funny thing is when Red showcases its new sensor, the affordable price for it and how it completely obliterates the competition...AGAIN. Its great to see other manufacturers upping their game, but I'm sure Red isn-t sleeping on this, either...

I wonder what the Dragon specs will be... 4k is so 2006 lol

This doesn't compete with the Epic, but it sure answers the Scarlet. This is very impressive, congrats Sony. And yes, thank you RED, you certainly put the competition under pressure. Amazing it's taken them this long!

With a proprietary Sony recorder that will probably set you back for another $nK.

I just don't get Sony and Arri — in 2012 a recorder should be brought on set only if you want to get ProRes/DNx files, but no, their mumbo jumbo cameras can't record RAW internally they need a recorder for that.

yea after factoring in the price of the recorder, this thing might not be so competitively priced against scarlet...

I don't understand, why these big companies don't have a similar codec like RED has. It is a key factor. Not just resolution.

kind of interesting since 3g hdsdi is only capable of about 2.8k of resolution or so. basically double 1080p. for a proper 4k it would have to be dual 3g hdsdi. it's the natural limit of the cable. or they'd have to resort to hdmi 1.4 protocol. either way, the only external recorders that can even attempt 4k capture right now is an I/O card and a computer. which can be ok with studio work but extremely limiting in a lot of other situations. time will tell i guess.

Maybe this doesn't apply to the OP's situation, but my gut feeling is that the Scarlet is going to end up being the deal of the century. Why? Because when asked about the board and sensor upgrade for the Scarlet to the Dragon Sensor, Jim said it would not cost as much as the camera (Scarlet). I read this to mean that for less than 20,000 dollars (camera body and upgrade), a Scarlet owner can end up with a camera that will probably outperform current Epic cameras that cost way more. Of course, Epics will perform even better when upgraded so they will still be the better performer, but for the total investment vs. performance the Scarlet will the superior bargain.
