  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thanks Apple...

why apple is not thinking to upgrade their mac mini with nehlam xeon processor for pro mobile desktop workstation ? @ the price of under $2000 lol hope am not dreaming!

Well, when you buy a PC you ARE buying a MAC... I wont switch back, OSX runs too well on a PC with same specs as a i7 or MacPro + 1/3 of the price AND PCI slots!!!

Nice ...very nice...Thanks for posting!!!

now that's interesting......

I'm sure Apple & co will want to scare the crap outta everyone doing it.

I guess the most important thing is OSX supported system devices on M/B.

so what's the deal with supported motherboards?

Dave,

(before he goes to Acer site and checks whether they support OSX)

I'll admit Apple does have their hands on Dual i7 boards that are not available yet, so matching their systems is not possible.

But you can get a system to match their Quad, which is a bargain for multiple OS's

oh yeah, and much much more.

How stable is it? And does EFI emulation now truly allow access to upgrades? Are you using the latest EFI-X flavor, or some other bootloader? How difficult was installation, and do RedCine and RedRushes both work dependably within the environment?

Sorry for the litany of questions, but this is pretty huge. Is there a thread with this information already located here somewhere?

Thanks,

Eryc

Well technically it's illegal so I don't know if this forum is the best to discuss it in depth on. But Project OSX86 is a great place to start. With that being said, I've done it before on an AMD machine. When I did it the AMD stability was terrible. But I've heard that with a properly configured Intel machine you can get matched stability with the official mac machines.

last I knew upgrades were still having to be conformed manually, but there are groups that do it for free. On the other things, I do not know.

Thanks for the info, Josh. Appreciate it.

As for the EULA violation status, I'm well aware of it and the implications thereof, but who says any of us are actually executing? :) Being an indie filmmaker, I would never break "the law." Just interested for the knowledge. Right. That's the ticket.

Just kidding, sir. Couldn't resist.

And to point out, I did it as a novelty challenge type thing. I already have... HAD... a Mac. I am currently computerless. But best believe I'm getting a mac again.

I own three towers (two intels/a power pc), four 24 in cinema displays, a beat up 17in powerbook and a special edition, first gen iMac (jukebox). I'm not utilizing this stuff under the auspice of a "business," so I effectively have had a VERY expensive hobby through the years. Presently, times are tough, and although I'm still willing to support Apple, I feel like I've been juiced enough through the years, I can stand a generation on modified hardware. Overall, I love macs and wouldn't trade them for anything, but the economy and all freelance work are practically dead. Makes it difficult to rush out and buy the latest 2.93 i7 loaded with SSD...especially when there are comparable alternatives.

Again, I LOVE my macs... but can you say "render nodes."

Honestly guys, despite the very interesting hobby that is the OSX86 scene...I can't imagine Jim or any of the other guys from Red want to see you talking about (essentially) stealing from a supportive partner of theirs. It's probably best to take such talk elsewhere.

You aren't stealing. You're breaking a EULA by installing it on unsupported hardware. You're breaking a contract. Big difference. Stealing is when you take something that isn't yours. I'm getting really sick and tired of words getting redefined at people's leisure to mean whatever is most convenient.

It's less stealing than your parking meter expring being stealing from the city.

The trial still hasn't even decided if it's even breaking a contract! It's pretty tough to say authoratively that this or that is illegal when the trial is still pending.
