  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thanks Apple...

Jim,

If you were going to buy a system (knowing what YOU know!) would you lean towards a MacPro dual i7 or a Skulltrail PC???

Couldn't it be GPU is RED's friend?

Going back to the early days of desktop video means the buss is not your friend. It turned out that doing the calcs at the CPU beat moving the data over the buss to a GPU and back. I don't know if buss speeds and GPU power have changed this, but keep an eye on the timeline and look for real time 4K R3D cross dissolves within two years.

Then will come layers and then keys and then all your dreams for a thousand bucks - which turned out to be FCP for me.

That's the way it went in the old days,

Rosco

If you're building a rendering farm:

For the price of one $3200 octa-2.33ghz Mac Pro we could buy:

4x quad-2.66ghz Core i7 PCs...
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellst...=6VAFF&oc=DXCWZY1&dgc=CJ&cid=24471&lid=566643

More than double the processing power.

Price/performance-wise, comparing Apple to PC is like comparing Sony to RED.

Sadly you guys don't make RedRushes or command line tools for PC. Just sayin'... it might help the RED revolution along if people could use PCs and cut rendering costs in half.

Guess I'd better give that new RED-enabled Avid Metafuze a go!

On which you will most likely thank stream processing units.
I'd say within one year.

Very true, if REDline was available on PC, even for the jobs where people wanted ProRes, I think I'd render to uncompressed on the PCs then use one MacPro to go to ProRes.

I must say, Bruce, you make a very compelling argument in favor of going the PC route. And I'm a die-hard Apple fan. But the new Mac Pro is just really, really expensive.

Using the link you provided, I came up with this config for $1559 total (I already have a monitor, speakers & other accessories):

PROCESSORS: Intel® Core™i7-920 Processor (8MB L2 Cache, 2.66GHz)
OPERATING SYSTEM: Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition SP1, 64-Bit
MEMORY: 12GB Tri-Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 6 DIMMs
HARD DRIVE: 500GB - 7200RPM, SATA 3.0Gb/s, 16MB Cache
OPTICAL DRIVE: Single Drive: 16X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capability
MONITORS: No Monitor
VIDEO CARD: ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB
SOUND CARD: Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
SPEAKERS: No speakers
KEYBOARD: Dell USB Consumer Multimedia Keyboard
MOUSE: Dell Premium Laser Mouse
BLUETOOTH AND MEDIA READER: Dell 19 in 1 Media Reader with Bluetooth
FLOPPY & MEDIA READER: Dell Media Card Reader included in Dell Bluetooth Package
WIRELESS: Dell 1505 WLAN PCIe card with11n mini-Card & external antenna

But that wouldn't be Avid qualified so that's not going to work.

"Price/performance-wise, comparing Apple to PC is like comparing Sony to RED".
That is ridiculous. I guess it depends on your definition of performance.
The Apple solution costs more, but its consistent and works.

Jim, speaking of Apple :-)

There are some very exciting new announcements today with iPhone 3.0 allowing developers to access the iPhone dock, Bluetooth and do push notifications!

How about opening Red up likewise? How about getting a Bluetooth dongle through the USB port to allow a myriad of iPhone/iTouch apps to talk to the Red (and then Epic and Scarlet)? There is a *tremendous* amount of possibility here!

The title of the thread got me all excited that Apple and Red were working hand in hand and had some new breakthrough either in workflow or technology.

I got my Mac Pro 8 core 2.93GHz Nehalem on Monday. Posted a little RED footage transcode speed test yesterday in Compressor with Qmaster Clusters: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=27694

I then compared the transcode time to my old 8 core 3GHz 2007 Mac Pro. Trounced it easily without having a RAID and way less memory.

I fully agree with Mr. Jannard. Thank you Apple & Intel. Now if only OWC had the 4GB memory modules in stock. I tell you one thing.. can't wait for Snow Leopard and FCS3... plus anything AJA may have up their sleeves. Exciting times... screw the recession... I'm investing.

Excellent find Bruce!!!!!

Standard system comes out at $800!! Put in a DVI switch and your right to go. But you know what the killer punch in this deal is.

It's I can buy 2-3 systems at this price and have backup/multiple systems.

~~SWEET!!~~
