  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Test of proxies, L&T and Redrushes

Will the ingested REDCODE media have better performance than the proxies currently do?

Depends on what you mean by "performance"? If you mean "ingest speed", for sure, since FCP won't have to do the transcode to ProRes. If you mean playback in the FCP viewer after ingest then that would be a function of the quicktime codecs involved...i.e. is the ProRes codec faster than the REDCODE codec. I don't have the answer to that as it depends on the quality of playback, etc.

Just remember, sometime in the process if you are shooting at 2K and you want a 2K final output (or 1K to 1K) you will have to debayer the REDCODE media. In going from 4K to 2K (since FCP can't handle 4K) it depends on the quality of the down size. This process is what takes most of the time and optimizations are being worked on now. The cost of having big, beautiful pictures is the amount of data you have to process.

I'm hoping for good editing performance: instant start, smooth playback, RT effects, multiple streams. 1K is plenty of resolution for an offline - I don't really need the higher res. But I want to avoid a transcode step (currently using Compressor/RR to go to 1K prores).

If I can get to a well-behaved 1K offline in FCP without a transcode and only a short ingest process, I will be very happy... and so will the many, many post supers and producers wanting to rent a few of our 12 Reds but are waiting for something like this.
