  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Test Footage from Scarlet soon?

very eager to see some Scarlet footage as well... Even more eager to know if she'll be out by this summer..

Hi Kalani,

As Ted has either stated or confirmed in quite a few NAB-interviews, the estimated release time is at this point; late summer or fall. My realistic guess would be this fall or perhaps a little later. We'll hopefully know soon :)

Can anybody find point to these clips without the Spanish overdub? I can't seem to find them via Google or Vimeo.

I found the original interviews. These are unedited, so you have to scroll to the point where it starts to get relevant.

This is the first one with Ted showing off the SCARLET and also talking about the EPIC: http://twit.tv/specials77

The second one with Mike Seymour (check his vimeo for a lot of cleaner EPIC vid's: http://vimeo.com/user3583480 ) talking about the EPIC and showing some footage from the camera: http://twit.tv/specials76

The site offers streaming and download of the vid's. Enjoy :)

Wouldn't Scarlet footage look exactly like EPIC? We just need a 3K EPIC crop to know what Scarlet looks like.

No I dont think it will look exactly like epic. It is the same sensor, but it is smaller, if I am not mistaken, we will get less low light sensitivity, and less dynamic range...Exactly like an epic, i dont think so, very very similar? I think so. but I could be wrong...hope im wrong...lol

If I'm not mistaken, they aren't the same senor (which is why it's a 2/3). The low light and what-not is something we'll have to wait and see. When I asked at NAB I was told it basically has the same low light performance as Epic. Scarlet has a large ISO range and gives a clean image at higher ISO's.

Honestly, after seeing it at NAB, I feel like the only real advantage Epic has is in resolution and frame rates. Personally, I think Scarlet has enough shallow depth of field when it's zoomed in and focused.

It's the same M-X sensor according to RED

Yep. I believe that it's based on the same design, just smaller and with a higher pixel density. How much this affects low light performance is anyone's guess at this point, but Ted always points out how clean the image is when he cranks up the iso whenever he does an interview, so I am not going to worry about that.

this is what I am hoping for :)

I believe the one clip we have (the lion video) was shot at high ISO and the pushed more in post and it still looks totally clean. The Scarlet's low-light sensitivity will be damn impressive :)

It's not the same sensor, no matter what Red said. Same sensor family / technology, same design philosophy/goals, sure. But it's not the same sensor in a different size the way R-1 MX and Epic are. Photosite density is triple the Epic/R-1. It's not necessarily an inferior sensor, but it is a different one.

No. Scarlet's image quality is significantly lower. That's why Red isn't putting much Scarlet footage out there.

Once again in this forum, things seems to get confused by semantics; one person's definition of "same" is different than another's. Since the Epic is a 5K sensor, sized at 30 x 15mm while Scarlet is 3K and 10.1 x 5.35 mm, they aren't the "same" in that regard. But, according to RED's nomenclature, they are both "Mysterium-X" sensors. So, I guess you could say they are the "same" design. Given Epic's 5.4 micron photosites vs. Scarlet's 3.3, they are also different in that regard. Finally, it seems like some people might be thinking of the sensor in the Epic-S, which is like the Epic-X sensor, and was formerly in the Scarlet family. Not sure if this is the case but would certainly create some confusion.

And, I also don't know why someone would off-handedly say the image quality of a Scarlet is "significantly lower" since we really don't have any evidence to corroborate or dispute that just yet. :coolgleamA:

Haha. You funny.

You speak as though you have worked with the Scarlet and know what you are talking about. Please share more insights from your experience with working with the Scarlet's image...

A sensible reason why scarlet footage isn't out there is because it's not at the same stage as EPIC is in terms of production ready...

To be spitting out scarlet footage like people are doing with EPIC footage would be to get everyone going WHERE IS SCARLET...

and we all know how that works out...

BOOYAH !

How much EPIC footage did they release before the M was shipping? I recall a few stills, and a couple very short HDRx clips, that's it.

And fun as it might be, I don't really see the point in having footage from a camera you can't use yet...

I'm not sure why you guys are jumping up and down on me for stating my honest opinion about the little bit of material we've been given.

"Scarlet has lower image quality than a camera costing 10x as much" isn't really even a criticism. Most people would say, "Well duh."

At no point did I deny that it still kicks the ass of anybody else's $50k camera...
