How is it that people think electric cars are "green"? As Mike Brennan alluded to in his post, they are obviously ignorant of the fact that ALMOST HALF of all electricity used in the United States in generated by burning coal!

And the politicians and media gleefully perpetuate the lies. Politicians bad-mouth coal/oil/natural gas extraction and use, and promote "green" ideas, which are a step back into a previous century. It's all about money, power, and controlling the uneducated masses.

America is the home of the dumbed down.

The one difference is that the coal power plant has about a 31% efficiency, whereas your car's engine averages around 18-20%. So even if we stayed with dirty coal, we'd be somewhat better off.

The other thing is that I can choose to live a long way from coal stations, but it's much harder to live away from cars!

Spreading FUD, I see...

Doesn't change the fact that electric cars are still much more efficient. The main reason is that the carnot efficiency limit of combustion engines doesn't apply to of electric motors and batteries, and therefore electric cars are usually are around 100mpg (energy equivalent). Heat engine power plants can burn much hotter and therefore be more efficient. You don't need extra power plants for electric cars as the charging is mostly done at night, using unused off-peak power. Shipping gasoline to pumping stations isn't free either. And in contrast to gasoline cars, you CAN be almost 100% emission free, like in Norway (discounting the production of the car, tires etc.)

Fun Fact: Extracting and Refining the oil for gasoline cars uses more electricity than electric cars use to drive per mile.

You got that right.

Edit: beaten.
