  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tell me again why 70mm Film is better than Dragon or Arri images?

Tarantino's actors' performances alone make him a great director. Watching the first scene of Inglorious Basterds, in the theater when it was released, has always left an impact on me.

Absolutely!!

And that is to say (back to the analogy of an orchestra) that well selected group of individual musicians which play extremely well their individual instruments, when guided by a Music Director will produce an incredible result, but even the best Music Director without great Musicians can't make an orchestra sing... Exact same reverses to a Film Director with Professionally capable actors.

Are you talking about viewing source material or a movie in a theatre? Because if the latter, then this...

Yes, a couple of strokes with my film-curve plugins and some adjustments made under 10 sec and you have a basic starting point for most material in the grade. Done.
Fools people every time.

A little bit insulting but whatever, because I sense this could become a very tedious back and fourth I'll say this, I've watched movies in the cinema and thought "That looks like Alexa" or "This looks like Red" and checked at home afterwards to see I was correct, I have mistaken film for Alexa more often then Alexa for film and I thought Only Lovers Left Alive was Red when it was actually Alexa. This isn't a bad thing, I like the look of Alexa and Red I think they produce great images but that doesn't mean I don't still like film as well, you may think you can casually drop some LUTs on some footage and thats good enough but it isn't and the fact that I have been able to see that a film was shot on Alexa from time to time isn't an indication that the movie was poorly shot as you seem to have implied.

I do have to give credit to Alexa and Red One because they are the best digital film look on the market but I did hear that they transfer to 35mm and back to digital, they both go hand in hand. So whatever you feel is your best tool we need to make it happen. No more dreams for me... I need this camera or that one, I need to get busy and do something.

Almost every movie I go to in Italy still has an intermission and there are never any trailers at the start of the film. If the film is at 8 it literally plays at 8. A lot of the "old culture" tarantino talks about in the short, still just happens that way in italian cinema's.

As for projection. That is a rat's nest. You can never know what is going to happen with a digital print. I have seen people convert QT files with Mpeg stream clip while using an iMac for playback. While there are and can be problems with film prints, when they play back you do see the intended quality. It's very hard for a filmmaker to have a film seen the way it was intended. Chances are, with THX sound, you get what you were supposed to hear, but what you are supposed to see can be a true hornets nest.

Even in digital projection many theatres place the projector lamp in "save" mode so stuff can look quite dingy.

The best we can do is make it the best quality possible and hope that someone on the other end gives a shit.

Here is a little quote from that article.

"Instead of the triumphant demonstration they were hoping for, the presentation of the Crest was a serious disaster. I'm not sure why anyone would stage a screening as significant at this one and not do a tech run-through first, but it happened. There's no way any competent projectionist would have seen what we saw tonight and gone ahead with the screening. There are many reasons tonight could have gone wrong, not least of which is because the projectionist's union that was at full-strength when I moved to LA is no longer in charge of things. One thing that happens when you have dedicated, well-paid, well-trained projectionists in every single booth is that you can expect things to be handled properly, and if there's a problem, you can expect that problem to get fixed. Fast."

i think you mean Sony Vialta (that was the name of the telecine)......

Yes, was so long ago... All those different TELECINE's melded into one . :) thanks for the correction.

To an extent, with exceptions -- I tend to think of a movie more like a symphony that has to work as a whole but where occasionally one instrument comes forward and stands out, and then steps back for another instrument. There are moments in a movie where you may appreciate a beautiful costume, a pretty face, a powerful music score, a fast camera move or crane shot, etc. as long as it is well-timed emotionally and enhances the story at that moment.

After all, a jump cut is rarely invisible, it is usually meant to be felt and noticed, like the cut from the bone to the spaceship in "2001", but it serves a purpose.

Lovely analogy

Yes... complete disaster. But was it. A good marketing effort none the less.

Like Baracka and Samsara, a 4k digital projection from 65mm shot films look fucking amazing.
I watched your Time Scapes on our 4k projector and that was rich and sharp as well.

Nothing wrong with film capture method, but FILM Projection is what trips up alot of well shot films at the finish line. All that effort wasted.

I am clearly in the minority here but in my humble opinion Tarantino is far far from being a great director. In fact, I think that he often shows very poor taste in his films without much if any great story telling.

Very subject opinion...

With amazing profits and cult followings from films like PULP FICTION, DJANGO, DUSK TILL DAWN, KILL BILL... I'm pretty sure you can't say he's far far from being a great director.

Anyone director that can get a movie up, sell and profit this day and age to me is a fucking legend.

Have a crack at doing what he's done.... alot harder than you may think.

I think he's a great director and a great maker, but not a great artist. I guess he will not stay in the history directors hall of fame. But anyway I enjoy his movies, it's dope. It's just difficult to differentiate homage from stealing when it comes to Tarantino.

I never ever pretended to be a film director, It is one of the most difficult jobs anyone can do. I also never equate box office success to great directing skills. Like I said, I am clearly in the minority here but Taratino's films never appealed to me like the ones by some of his contemporaries. Love of film will always be subjective and we can agree to disagree. For the record, From Dusk Till Dawn was not directed by Tarantino, It was directed by Robert Rodriguez. Tarantino has writing credits on that project.

he also starred and sorta produced it

I'm not sure what we're saving with Film...?

I'd rather bring back DVD and Music Album sales ... Independent Productions, not inflated budget films shot on Film for a handful of theaters.

I'm excited to see the film in 70mm here in LA... I thought Interstellar's IMAX was stunning. But anytime you see something in a normal theatre it seems stepped on quite a bit and projection quality is often questionable. It's too bad that audiences don't get to see what the filmmakers do. I remember watching a camera test for a feature I was on that was a print directly from the original negative, then projected in a theatre that an amazing projector and lens... It was almost an emotional experience... I've never seen anything like it before then, or since then... Except for probably the Epson 8K laser projector showing footage from the NHK 8k research camera.... So both are amazing in my eyes, but it takes very tight quality control from end to end to really create the best experience.

I've had far more bad experiences as an audience member with digital projection than film. From the first time I saw a DCP, which I think was RocknRolla in 2008, and the projector was slowly and torturously flickering at about a 1 second interval the entire 2 hours.

Honestly every movie I've seen in the past year, if it wasn't IMAX or Dolby/AMC Prime, has looked terrible and/or had technical issues. I've had to walk out of a couple of them and politely ask for my money back it was so bad.

I went to The Overnight and literally looked like a log file. So I got my money back after 15 minutes of looking for a staff member to alert them to the issue. And when they looked at the screen they tried to tell me that that was how it was supposed to look.

The screening of Ex Machina I went to had crazy and distracting blue channel noise. Like big chunks of Red MX under tungsten x 10. Which isn't present in the version I watched online.

I just saw Spectre last weekend, and it was incredibly muddy and dim and low contrast. And there was an even lower contrast blob on the image that took up about a third of the screen. The only reason we didn't walk out was because it was Thanksgiving and we were too full of food to have the strength to complain.

Just to name a few.

It's to the point where I'm hesitant to spend my money at a theater because I've come to expect that I will be frustrated and disappointed. The only theaters here in NYC where I've found any consistency are the AMC Prime and IMAX. And one has to pay a premium at both.

If I see, very rarely these days, that I'll be able to see a film print of a film, I'm excited to go. If it's digital projection, I'm always nervous that it will be subpar... Mostly for my girlfriend because she has to hear me complain.

Digital projection is supposed to be this great equalizer. To remove one of the variables in image quality. But my personal experience has not shown that to be true at all.

I'm not surprised. The Crest has a new, questionable and inexperienced management. I have only seen two 35mm prints projected over there since they took over. First was an independent documentary (with projection issues) and the second was a private screening of Star Wars 1977 (UK IB Tech - Original release print from 1977) which they leaked on twitter without the organizers permission. This one was handled properly... They show all their revival programming in digital and they'll even project from DVD sources from time to time. I don't frequent this place - been burned too many times.

Not sure what Tarantino was thinking. We have 2 American Cinematheque theatres (Aero and Egyptian) in the city that would have been perfect for this.

You can go to the Restaurant known to have the absolute best food in the world...

But if your Server absolutely Sucks... Takes your order wrong... Brings the food too fast, before you are even finished with your earlier course... Brings the food in the wrong order... Brings the food cold... then your experience will NOT be pleasant one...

This is yet an other very sad tail of how things must be taken care under ALL angles when trying to bring something to the public done in an Untraditional way... 70mm Equipment is aging fast... The people that where savvy in their use have aged long ago... The revival os such systems is not an easy task, and it is not just about shooting 70mm, nor about Post issues with 70mm, but about Delivery in 70mm...

I wish Tarantino the best, because of his and his team's efforts and because I do applaude this, even so I would have shot it Digital and then did a Master 70mm Print out... :)

It does seem Tarentino's target audience is 70mm film-o-phyles like himself.

Like saying that James Cameron's target audience is 3D aficionado, when it's just a marketing tool...

Naaaa, I don't think Tarantino's audience cares about the format. I think they just want snappy dialogue, a very fast-paced story, intense characters, and over-the-top violence. Most of his films have hit it out of the park on all of these elements, particularly Inglorius Basterds and Kill Bill. The choice of format is meaningless -- most of the visuals were determined by Bob Richardson's lighting. Bob does great work.
