  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

A quick post to let everyone know that http://technica3d.com is up and running with information about our 3D rig development as well as system availability.

There is also a gallery section with images of the prototypes being used in different production environments.

Check it out. Content will be added weekly.

Approximatley how much doe the Beamsplitter weigh ?
 
The prototype beam splitter system in the photo is under 30lbs before cameras. Not sure of the weight with cameras and lenses but every time two ACs have picked up the fully dressed rig, they were surprised at how light it was.

We don't have a weight on the production model but it is definitely less.

I just used both the Technica Red rig and their SI2k system and while obviously the SI2k system weighs much less and can be held and operated with only one hand the Red rig fully decked out weighs somewhat more than two cameras and it's designed with a two sided rail system that allows two people to easily move the system around the set, up and down stairs without problem or injury.

Critical camera alinement is simple to setup and holds for days.

It's a total thing of beauty!
 
The beam splitter looks really solid and compact. Nice design, seems well thought out in terms of the different inter ocular/base seprations achievable.

Excerpt from the Technica 3D homepage.

"While we will eventually offer these systems for sale, initially they will be available for rent in an effort to offer early adopters the highest level of support possible"

The rigs in the photo at the top of the thread are 2 different configurations of our full size rig. We are just finishing up the production version of that system which will be widely deployed for rentals (Keslow Camera in LA). It is delivered as a dual system and the rental house will have the discretion to configure it for beam splitter work or side by side work depending on the customer's requirements. This will be closely followed by the intermediate and miniature versions which will have similar flexibility.

We will be announcing other rental partnerships in major production markets in the very near future.

Again you have design a great Rig for S3D Stephen, and surely looking forward to see the Intermediate configuration for Scarlet/Epic, also because I believe in the need of a simpler design and configuration of this rigs, as some that I have seen out there are far too complicated, and they don't need to be, computer controlled unit, to take the math out of the way are surely nice to have.

Not interested in renting as I will be taking the units to Italy, so will wait for them to become available for sale, hopping that the release of Scarlet/Epic will be close to that of your Intermediate S3D rig.

An other issue, as off course I'm sure you are very aware of, is that if the Rental house was to set the unit up for you at the rental house, then you will have to most undoubtably have to return to the rental house to have the Rig reconfigured, as so far I see always the need to change from Parallel to Beam Splitter configuration, or vice versa, as the needs for the shoots will require.

I understand that there are few Stereographers capable of doing changes in the rig configurations, but nonetheless they are, and this is a process that will save much time if the rig rents out full, allowing the on set Stereographer to do any changes (not on set off course).

Thanks for the kind words.

While the current generation of rigs take a bit of time to reconfigure (from parallel to beam splitter and back) the process will get simpler. As it stands anyone trained up on the system should be able to execute the change.

We know you prefer to own the gear you shoot with but rental might be a good way to test drive the system before you buy. As far as geography goes, we will soon have systems across Europe including Italy. By renting you will get much better support from your local rental house than we can ever give from North America.

While you're still in Vegas you should make the time to come see us. We've got all sorts of interesting projects in the works ;-)
 
Will definitely stop by before leaving for for good, count on it, not only I want to see first hand what you guys are up to, but I want to share what I'm up to and see in what ways we can benefit form each other.

Love your gear as you know, bought just about everything you have made so far, well almost, and I completely understand the way it works with the S3D rigs, still will find a way for Ketchframe to have their own :) I'm sure.

I have four of seven projects in the final developing stages, and all will be shot in S3D, even if a 2D format will be also finished, the S3D is what I intend to push for, including a large project for Dubai, likely the first S3D there, so owning the gear customized to fit the needs of my projects is imperative and this the main reason for not wanting to rent, also because I'm very particular about my gear and the way I keep it.


Btw Stephen, did you know that "The Venice Film festival on Monday announced plans for a new sideline award for the festival's best Stereoscopic 3D film, adding a cutting-edge aspect to the world's oldest film festival" Pretty cool!

That Award will be mine, its my home, and I wanted, and " Chronicles of Perseverance" in S3D will bring it home for me :) (modesty was never my strong kind of thing, hehe).

Neutron looked very good at NAB, look forward to Pulsar, and as soon as I have my Epic-X cameras (or a couple of TATTOOS) will come and test them out at ET.

Good stuff. In the page "3D basics" the section 3 (3D pitfalls and procedures) doesn´t seem to load. Clicking a topic there just reloads the page you are currently in. I tried it in Chorme and Safari.

The site seems to be an excellent resource for 3D related info!

Yeah you happened to find one of the few pages I haven't written yet. Give me a little more time and I will get to it :thumbsup:
