  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi, guys, I was reading on Newsshooter.com about the new Atomos CEO not working out and I was reading some of the comments about Atomos and what they could do for future products. I've been looking into analog conversion solutions mostly for retro video games by using certain professional video converters and recorders and I couldn't help but think if Atomos simply made analog connections on their Shogun and Ninja recorders, they could have simple 1-click Prores retro video recording solved for everyone.

Then the thought of upscaling came into play and converting older 8-bit signals to 10-bit HDR and if they just added that and did it very well then that could open all kinds of recording possibilities. Currently this kind of thing can mostly be done with old videogame systems by using a Retrotink HDMI conversion unit with a Marseille Inc. mClassic upscaler and decent modern cables for the system of choice. There's even DIY projects and open source boxes being made that can combine these features so having a big company like Atomos tackle it could be amazing!

But then looking forward, there is stuff like Topaz AI solutions and other AI in the works, how long could it be before we could have easy to use AI solutions for upscaling and HDR conversion or even RAW conversion? Makes me think about the old Andromeda HD project for the Panasonic DVX100 and even Magic Lantern with Canon DSLR cameras, lot of potential left on the table with those older sensors, could be interesting if recordings could be easily converted to better quality on the fly.

Basically looking backwards could be an interesting move for a few products at least and experimenting there could lead to some interesting things moving forward. I think what may be hitting Atomos now is just competition from other brands like Feelworld, Lilliput, etc. for monitoring and cameras coming with built in higher end codecs and RAW as well as cutting off support for certain cameras or not even expanding into certain markets, such as 16-bit recording out of higher end Sony cameras and even coming up with something less complex for F65 type cameras, is just limiting to their potential in my opinion. Heck, there was even a story on Newsshooter.com about a USB 3.0 camera to HDMI converter box that looked more exciting than the prospect of another basic Shogun/Ninja refresh, Atomos clearly just needs to have fun and think outside of a recorder/monitor box they've placed themselves in.
