  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tech support anamorphic Request

Fredrik,

Great! Really looking forward to your results. I just sent my lens in for service last week. Looks like the PL Mount needs adjusting and another small fix. Less expensive than I thought it would be at Duclos Lenses. Should have it back very soon now along with receiving my RED soon Hopefully! He said it would fix the focus issues I was having between f2.4 and 5.6 so I am stoked to get it back and play some more!

I am very anxious to see/here your results! Looking forward to it!

Mike

The ANA mode is only showing guide lines to where it will crop it doesn't actually affect the image - your still shooting for example 4K 16:9. It also contains meta data telling REDCine what you've been shooting. The only annoying thing is that REDCine tend to mess it all up and you end up sorting that out instead.

I suggest you use the ANA mode for seeing where to "crop", make a mark on your monitors and then shoot 4K 16:9.

Do the crop yourself in REDCine, REDAlert etc.

(By the way Mike I've done the lens tests. I will email you results later).

Anamorphic on the RED

Hey guys,

I am currently shooting a feature on the RED, with a set of HAWK V-SERIES anamorphics. This is what we have done. (thank you to Vantage for making such wonderful lenses, and to CineTec for maintaining them)

We are shooting the RED in 4k 16x9. We shot a 2.40 frame chart with a circular-focus wheel in the center of the chart. Once my DIT got it into the computer, he squeezed it down to the proper ratio, the circle was the right shape, and we had to cut off the left and right sides of the frame to maintain a proper aspect ratio.

For onboard monitoring we used a transvideo (through an AJA down-converter), and that monitor squeezed it down to an approx. 2.10:1 which left it barely tall and skinny, but worked OK for operating, even though it is an SD signal, we had to tape it off, losing the Right and Left, so I only saw my final 2.40 frame size.

My 1st AC used the on-board RED monitor, and we sent 2 signals to our big HD monitors, one HDSDI and one SD from the Transvideo, so we could easily switch between an HD image and an aspect-semi-correct SD signal.

Once we got it into REDcine, everything was great, easily converted to a 2.40, we just don't use a ton of the image (left and right). Looks great for HD, and we get the nice optical qualities of mid-lens anamorphics. We shot the V-series at a T4 most of the time, sometimes at a T5.6, but we also got a little dangerous and shot at a T2.8, even a T2.2/2.8, only when I really had to.

We have yet to have problems with shooting 4k 16x9, or anything yet, but we will post anything that goes wrong with this whole process.

Have you had a chance to try the LS Design monitor for viewing anamorphic? I hear this monitor is pretty nice and is a much less expensive unit in comparison. If you can post some pics that would be awesome!
