I'm pricing out TB3 RAID options. I'm a one-man shop, mainly editorial with light GFX and Grading. I searched this forum and whittled down my options.

I've got it narrowed down to the Promise Pegasus3 R8 32TB ($3,800), G-Tech G-SPEED XL 32TB ($4,000) or the Areca ARC-8050T3 8 Bay ($1,900) + 8 - WD Red Pro 4TB NAS HDs ($1,400). The Areca + drives is the cheapest option by at least $400 so I'm leaning that way. As far as I can tell, G-Tech and Promise don't tell you which drives are included in the enclosure, is that correct? I like knowing what's inside the box.

Any other recommendations on Hard drives? Currently looking at WD Red NAS, WD Red Pro NAS (not sure what the diff is), Seagate Ironwolf, & HGST Deskstar NAS. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Can anyone else recommend HDD's for a DAS Raid? I'm assuming enterprise drives are the way to go since I'm not building a NAS.

Just to follow up for anyone else who may have similar needs/questions in the future.

I was contemplating the following Thunderbolt 3 RAID ARRAYS:

G-SPEED Shuttle XL 32TB - 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID - $3,999.95 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod...y_0g05849_g_speed_shuttle_xl_thunderbolt.html
Promise Pegasus3 R8 32TB 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID - $3,879 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod..._p3r8hd32us_32tb_pegasus3_r8_thunderbolt.html
Areca 8050T3 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 Enclosure + 8 HDDs of my choosing - $????

I ended up getting the Areca 8050T3 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 Enclosure + 8 x 4TB HGST Ultrastar 7K6000 for a grand total of $3,156. A savings of about $800 from the other two.

Hi,

I worked with two G-SPEED XL 32TB TB2 Units on a larger Featurefilm Project last autumn.
Both of them are running around 900 MBytes/s in RAID 5 configuration, which is 300 MByte/s less G-Technology advertised with 1200 MByte/s.

Compared to the Areca it's slower.

I use a Areca 6-Bay with WD Red Pro NAS, 4TB Drives for four years now, with great speed around 850MByte/s read/write without any problems.
