For those who love Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" The art book publisher Taschen just released the most beautiful and thorough book set about the making of the movie. There's only 1500 copies, 4 books in the set - 2 of them stored in a black metal monolith and all 1500 copies are autographed by Christiane Kubrick (his widow).

I got my set Friday and did a small unboxing video with my new Epic X - complete "nerdgasm".

I see that the books are already sold out, even at $1000 a piece...

They still have the "Art" edition - same package but you get a special print with it - those are more expensive and will sell out soon for sure. For the regular sets I would call the stores to see if they have any left. The one in Beverly Hills had 2 copies last Friday.

Man. I was so jazzed but $1000. Too rich for me. However I did just take delivery of The Kubrick Archive. Fantastic book but it would be much easier if it came in volumes. You need arms like Popeye if who hope to kick back in a recliner to read.

The Kubrick Archive is an amazing book. The collector edition is long out of print and yes you do need to eat your spinach before lifting that one. The current edition is not too bad, same content, smaller and less expensive.. Taschen usually release smaller versions of their collector books. I'm sure the making of 2001 will eventually be made available in a smaller format and it won't be as expensive.

There was an unexpected surprise in the collector edition of the 2001 collector set - a reproduction of the March 1969 MAD Magazine's "201min of a space idiocy" - it's very funny

Their entire catalogue is an amazing treasure trove of artistic references. They have so many fantastic books on almost any aspect of art, from filmmaking over photography, painting, tattoo art....
The books are quite expensive to start with but a lot of older or last year volumes can be found quite cheap in discount bookstores that buy up last batches and small volume runs, for example: http://www.zweitausendeins.de/
there are several more
