Not sure if here or off-topic is the right place to go, but I try here.
I can move to OT if it doesn't feel relevant.

Gunleik,

its an illegal posting of the his films ... ofcourse they are still under copyright. some of the comments
even claim its a rip from from Criterion. Its a real shame because his films are so unique and narrow and the
the ever shrinking residuals will take an even larger hit because of that page:(

Is there a legal source of his work. Like online or BluRay etc?

The Sacrifice was on Netflix not too long ago. The visual quality was pretty good. I thought it had some beautiful imagery but it was incredibly ponderous. I don't think it would get an audience today.

My two favorite films, nostalgia and stalker, are on DVDs ... The quality is just ok. Some of his other films are on blu-ray, but not the ones I'm fanatical on. You have to be in the right mood to watch his films, when ever I get sick and and am not so hyper, I watch all his films back to back.

They are films made for arts sake and outside of all of the constraints of any commercialism. They could never have been made outside of the soviet system. The same is true for Soy Cuba and Come and See. Masterpieces all, and truly unique works of art.

Would be nice to see someone finance a hirez film scan of these type of works to preserve them for the ages.

@Sidney.

I can take the link down.
It does however (at least in my part of the world) worry me slightly that a lot of great art gets lost due to the digital revolution.
At least here it can be seen. (Or bought or both)

ofcourse you should take the link down! - criterion and other distributors use a significsnt amount of money to maintain and
restore films like this, not to mention the residuals that befall on his relatives.
stealing is stealing.

That sounds a bit hyperbolic. Many other films from then and now have been made purely for the sake of art. For example Herzog's entire catalog, except for Rescue Dawn perhaps.

I would think anything made in the Soviet Union would have had way more constants -- perhaps not commercial ones -- than any self-financed creative project. The Golden Rule applied in the Soviet Union as much as anywhere else.

For all of those against the online release of this content, what is your opinion on exemptions for educational purposes? Are we not all here to learn?

Most Tarkowsky films are available on Blu Ray, all on DVD. No need for inferior/pirated streaming options.

i have no clue why gunleik hasnt removed this link. ive seen regular folks here banned
because the insult people. but a moderator breaking the law gets a free pass??

inregards to the comment about stealing for educational purposes? if you want to study a Monet or Picasso
you have plenty if options doing that- same with Tarkovsky - but stealing a Picasso off the wall and bringing it back home is not one of them.
stealing is stealing end of discussion.

Done

Discussion here is good, though. Both on Tarkovsky and the issue of copyright and art disappearing (or why I was so slow in removing the link. Sorry)

to any one wanting to learn more about Tarkovsky - he has written an excellent book - sculpting in time.

- Gunleik, Tarkovsky has never had a greater presence than now - As someone here pointed out - he is on US netflix! in his own book he talks about how tough it is to reach his audience through traditional narrow release in Cinemas.
