I remember talking with people on these forums about tape backup several months ago, and a lot of people said that it's best to wait for the camera to be released to get a tape backup system. The camera is out, does anybody have reccomendations on a good backup solution? I figure tape is best because of the huge amount of stuff I will be shooting, a feature film and some other side projects..

I am starting to think that LTO 3 tape is the right way to go. Those firewire drives are suspect to failure and their shelf life is not exactly attractive.

Anything you shoot is going to have to be considered volatile until it gets to a secure and long lasting backup solution.

Five years is not that far away.

PS: you realize that this thread is going to turn into one gigantic discussion about: DVD's, HD DVD, holographic storage, USB devices, FW drives, digital tape, film, the future, the past, archiving, resolution, safety and security, Dont you?

Is there any downside to using LTO tapes? Thanks.

Edgar

I think the downside is access to you material. You would have to archive it and bring it back. With FW you could plug it in and go (proving a platter hasn't failed or something.

With LTO it is just good to know that if media files on your machine "go" you can always retrieve the tape back up. It's like the security of a tape based workflow, but the tape is LTO 3 tape. The read and write time are pretty quick (hours for a 400 or 800 GIG back up) but that is a lot of data.

The concept of reliability by redundancy is one that I always follow. You really can't have too many backups stored in too many different places.

Best case scenario - hard drives for short term usage with a tape backup on the shelf for long term archiving. Throw in Blue Ray or similar optical formats for an additional means of backup, but that may require many discs if you have a lot of footage and this format should be thought of as mid term, meaning it probably won't last as long we would like, but it's a viable second or third backup.

Skip.

You'd be doing the Tape backup from a fairly full FW drive. I do not think it could be simultaneous. It's more of an end of the day or overnight thing.

Hi,

I had a demo at IBC at the Quantum-booth for the LTO-solution and it was pretty convincing, from the technical POV as well as from the workflow. I am anxiously looking forward to ban the term "logging" out of my vocabulary.. :bleh:

Could you expand on this and give a few details on how the workflow using the Quantum machines would work? I was just on the phone with a guy at Quantum and he didn't have the answers. Funny, cuz he said that since NAB they have had to dedicate a guy to handle all of the enquiries from red users.

Anyways, my main question is, can I dump to LTO-3 AND a hard drive at the same time from the card reader? I know one post doesn't seem to think so, but by the sounds of your post, it seems a little more promising. If it were at the end of the day, or overnight, this solution doesn't appeal to me too much.

Skip,

You can do a bit more reading here:

What happens is you generate a backup to tape. That back up seems to be "encoded" so would then have to be "decoded" I do not believe you can write multiple sessions to a tape.

Also, the interface is ultra scsi so you would not be using it with a laptop.

Not exactly true. There are 3rd party external devices that contain a PCIe slot that will allow you to drop a SCSI or Fiberchannel card into it then interface with Laptop. I will most likely be incorporating that into the workflow for certain projects.

Steve. Cool. Thanks for sharing. Let us know what that set up will look like.

this magma thing look very interesting. I wonder what will happen if i hook up AJA or BM Card inside. That must be something, or i will see some sparkles

what I have seen used VERY successfully - was a MPEG encoder card in a magma box - doing realtime DVD encoding at a very high quality -

We have an eval unit of the new Quantum LOT-3 with ethernet connect coming next week - (think its the 600A) - we'll let you know what we think -
