Take a listen to this...

what on earth are we dealing with here? this hiss sounds really really bad, so bad that I am not sure I can "fix it in post"

had phantom power powering the mic on location ..all my recordings using a mixer and running LINE IN on the red sound AWESOME..what gives?

thx for any help on this

is it a must at this point to work only with a mixer using LINE IN not MIC IN with phantom power ON with RED?

hmm could actually be something with phantom caused by a bad cable or connection. What kind of mic did you use?

I don't know if this is particularly helpful, but I've had the impression that the people who are happiest with the Red sound right now are not using the internal phantom power.

Had the same problem with footage from a shoot on Friday. I'm new running single system sound, so maybe someone just needs to share a few tips on how RED best works with audio.

Thanks.

how are people running PROFESSIONAL sound with a RED?

If I need to get a mixer. fine. It's just that when we go shoot like this with no warning that things get heated and I get pissed. I just need to know HOW to work around issues such as this.

What are the professionals on the board using to record sound and or mix sound for the RED?

Did you use the new (one-piece) audio adapter cable from RED?
RED suggests to always use this kind of cable when phantom power is active.

It's been said quite a few times before, but Phantom power doesn't work yet!

Until they fix it, it will always suck. The only way to get good audio for now is to use the line in with an external pre-amp of some sort.

If you use line in from a mixer or external pre-amp you are fine. None of the combinations work except line in.

I've gone back and forth with Support and it is a known issue that they are working on.

Have you tested the 4 channels?
I want to record on board with a mixer and HF but didn't do the test.
Does FCP support 4 channel sound embedded in the R3D QT proxy?

Do line input also need the special mini to normal RED xlr adapters?

Thanks.

It's right there in the release notes for build 15:

http://www.red.com/support/release_history/4
"Noise may be present on +48V Phantom Power Output."

And as I said before, the release notes also states the following:

Use of +48VPhantom Power not recommended unless using the new RED XLR-to-mini-XLR cable adaptor (single cable with integrated adaptor). Use of XLR-to-mini-XLR adaptor and mini-XLR-to-mini-XLR cable (an adaptor and a cable) should NOT be used. If you need this new XLR-to-mini-XLR cable adaptor, please contact RED for a replacement.

As a side note, using release 13 I was able to use phantom power with no problem at all, even with the old adapter cable. So I think it depends heavily on the mics in use.

eta on a fix? Build 16?

Obin,

I think the only way to get the results you want is to run the microphone through a mixer. OR use a bettery in your microphone instead of powering ti from the camera.

Most shotgun mics allow you to place a battery inside THUS no need for phantom power.

Maybe you had the battery in the mic and Phantom power on? That might yield these resulsts.

Did you monitor the sound with a pair of headphones? You probably would have heard this stuff.

how are people running PROFESSIONAL sound with a RED?

I would think most professionals are still using double system sound. As in recording to another device as opposed to recording on the RED ONE. And possibly sending the line out from the recorder to the RED as backup sound, or for easier syncing, or for use even without a clapper when shooting sensitive subject matter.

I will still be using double system.
