  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I think I once saw a table for panning/DOF/flicker, maybe some asc document, pretty much like a DOF calculation.

Anyone remember where I can DL it?

But wasn't there a Dutch dp that presented his strobing tests at the ibc two years ago, that showed that strobing on the Rone happened at different speeds than on traditional film cameras?

I definately remember him getting quite some heat for that, largely unfounded...
 
Strobing can manifest itself in different ways, depending on how you process your footage. You can make strobing more noticeable by over-sharpening your images, for example. That Dutch DP, if that happened, may be on to something though. The slower read/reset on the Mysterium chip vs. the shutter action on a film camera, which is a bit more than 2X as fast, can have more effects than just rolling shutter skew. There are times when I think digital video and RED footage seems to strobe more than I would expect or want. It's not anything unique to RED, but when downsampling RED or other 4K image sources to 2K or less, we get inherent sharpening. There's almost always no need to add additional sharpening to RED footage that is processed from full-debayer 4K if we're downsampling to a 2K or 1080p finish. Altering the exposure time can offset some of the shutter skew and strobing in some situations.

As always, test and test again. And not just shooting scenarios, but image processing and post pipelines as well, to see which combinations give you the results you want.
