  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just a FYI,

Switronix has upgraded the Jetpack to the Jetpack X. It has a battery backup function so you can hot swap batteries while filming...enough to power your Red and accessories for a couple minutes while you scramble to find a fresh battery to keep the shoot going.

Also, they currently have a trade in program to help with getting the new Jetpack X. You can either trade in your 1st gen Jetpack for $250 or you can keep your Jetpack and get a loyalty discount for $200. Check it out here: http://www.switronix.com/jetpack-x-upgrade-program

Hope this helps someone out! I got mine today and ALREADY I can tell it will help out a lot...especially knowing that now I don't have to power down to swap batteries...:thumbsup:

PS- I have the x mounting plate on the back...of course this doesn't come with it, but it definitely helps with getting the Jetpack (both old and new) off and on my Epic.

That is nice! For those who don't already have a Jetpack, that might be a good alternative (especially with the LCD screen it has). But for the money, I chose the upgrade option Jetpack X...I actually only ended up spending around $200 for the upgrade. Can't beat that- Switronix as a company gets MAJOR COOL POINTS for that! Great company in good business in my book.
 
And just to add, this post was more about letting Reduser's know there was an upgrade offer option out there for the Jetpack. I hadn't seen any threads on here and I didn't want anyone missing out on such a great deal if they've been looking to upgrade. I actually haven't seen any posts about the Jetpack X release either, so this might be new to some. If anyone has any other options for a power connectivity devices like Bob, post them! It would be good to have a place for people to compare devices like these.

I have the jetpack x as well. I got mine customized. It has 2x 12v and 1x 7.2v connections. I also changed them to all 2 pin Lemos. I also got them to rotate the connections so I can easily add right angled lemo connectors.

I haven't really field tested yet though.

If you purchased it directly from them or one of their third party vendors (like WC) you should still qualify the discounted upgrade. I would take the loyalty discount and then sell your first ten Jetpack here on Reduser or something like eBay...you could possibly get around $250 for it on eBay/Craigslist/or someone on Reduser, and then with the +$200 loyalty discount, all you would be coming out of pocket is around $250. Seem's like a very good deal from Switronix- they worked with me on this and was a great company! Really appreciate them honoring existing Jetpack owners with the discounted upgrade.

And the Jetpack X works great! I really like the battery backup option so far...really helps with the workflow and not having to power down the camera while swapping out batteries.
 
Do you get an accurate read of the remaining battery power, using either the Switronix JP-V-EPIC (no internal backup battery) or JPX-V-EPIC (internal backup battery), while using non-RED batteries?
Also, a couple people were mentioning that they got random power-offs using this plate. Are you guys experiencing that?

So far, I haven't had any issues with the camera cutting off. What I will watch out for, now that you've pointed it out, is the passthrough information from the battery to the brain. Again, I haven't had the random power-offs you mentioned, but I will continue to test and let you know.

That's likely because of the battery integrated into the Jetpack now...part of the reason for the upgrade.

For gimbal users that can buy an alternative to power other accessories, the extra weight could be an issue...

IMHO, This board shouldn't be a place to advertise your products, but a place for Red Camera users to discuss accessories for their cameras, apart from salesman pitching their products to us.

Maybe I'm taking your comment out of context, but I don't work for Switronix. When it comes to this type of stuff, I don't work for anyone other than myself. I owned the original Jetpack and then decided to upgrade to the Jetpack X because of the hot-swappable functionality it added- and these guys (Switronix) are offering a great deal with the upgrade option. It ended up being a great deal for me and something I wanted to share with other Redusers who I figured would also like the deal. I've received SO much help from this forum, I jumped at the opportunity to give something back, even if its just information about the upgrade program.

I don't know where you were trying to go with your comments about "advertising your products"...but I definitely agree with your latter comments about the purpose of the forum...which is what I was trying to do- help people in the industry stay ahead.

Point number two- I doubt the majority of people who buy this will use this on a gimbal setup...I seriously doubt it. Still, it's kind of funny because I actually thought about how to work it into my current gimbal setup. I figured I would try to attach it to the crossbar of my Ronin (where it doesn't affect the load capacity of the gimbal) and then run a P-tap extension cable down to the camera brain. This would allow me to "hot-swap" the batteries and continue shooting without interruption if a battery goes dead.

So again, I don't understand where you were trying to go Jeffrey, but hopefully this clears things up.

Is the WC Quick Back v2 your recommended plate for mounting the Jetpack to brain?
I'm probably going to get the JP-V-EPIC (without internal battery) and I'm researching mounting options.

There's probably a 100 ways to connect this to your camera brain. I already had the quick back from WC...I don't know if its the second version though...but I'm glad whichever one I had works with both Jetpacks...and I don't think it was that expensive so it might be a good option.
 
What cables are you guys using from this jetpack (or similar battery plate) to power your additional accessories?
I need cables to power my monitor (XLR 12V) and Tascam DR-100MKII recorder (DC 5V).
