  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Support for Cooke 20-100 Zoom

We were shooting a HP commercial last week with 2 red's one had my 18-100 on it and the other had a Angenieux 15-40, since we had a few minutes to mess around we put both lenses at 24mm, T2.8 1/2 and ran them through 2 Panasonic 17" LCDs. Cross looping the signal to remove the monitors as a variable.

They don't look the same. The Cooke gives the image a dimensional 3-d feel and the Angenieux felt more 2-d, I like the 3-d look, but not necessarily for everything. Brook W. commented that the Angenieux was for "Science Fiction". Contact, but not Outland ?

Other Notes:

The Cooke is warmer - Not a big deal here, a touch of the slider.

The Angenieux is a little sharper in the corners ( just barely noticeable on the 17" ) ... Sometimes this is desirable... If you were shooting a wall of product and wanted it to be snappy in the corners it would be a good lens to get. Also better for Greenscreen work.

I next tried a Zeiss 24mm Ultra Prime and it looked just like the Angenieux. Same dimensionality, same color.

I did not roll any on the test... In hindsight I should have. Cameras ( #199 and #513 ) could have varied, but I think both were well set up and set up the same.

It's very close to the 18-100 which is still produced and a marveless lens. Shot 3 commercials with it on the Red so far and another 10 or so 15 years ago on 35mm. In its time it was revolutionary and many famous features were shot with it. Huge and heavy with an unique kind of focus roll-off and a very special 3 dimensional feel.

Hard to find good ones now, I suppose.

Hi Matt,

I rarely quote myself but your comment on the 3 dimensional feel of the Cooke 18 (20)-100 forced me to. Nice to share impressions...
