  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Super8 to Redcode Transfer

I've got two workprinters one super8 and one 16mm. I will get my red next week, when I come back from holidays I'll try it.

I am curious to know if I can transcode other files into R3D files so I can work with them more efficiently in Premiere Pro? That little resolution scaling trick in the Adobe/Red video got me to thinking....

Also, do R3D files have any spatial limitations, like 4K 16:9 or whatever? I imagine that if Epic files are going to be R3D, then the answer is "no limit."

Luca,

How is the build quality with these machines? Do you currently run directly into a capture card?

Tom, what's this have to do with Super8 film!! :)

Tom's thinking of using it for his IMAX timelapse movie I suspect.

The workprinters are old but restyled super8 and 16mm projectors modified to capture frame by frame into computer directly. The quality is really good, we did thousand of transfers from super8 to digital. The 16mm especially is an old eiki projector (they still use it on videoart expositions to make endless loop with films).
There are two applications one for pc and another one for mac that can transfer the frame to file. The problem is they are based on quicktime and you need a firewire connected to the camera. Maybe with blackmagic intensity you can capture the frames from the video output of the camera through hdmi.
Another problem could be that you need a 4:3 frame and the Red is 16:9.
Anyway I will check in september when I come back.

I had talked to Roger Evans who makes the Workprinter about this very same post, and they have a NEW suite coming out very soon that should change the existing workflow and also make it easier to use it with the RED. Roger seems like a good guy, so keep an eye on his site and there should be some cool things happening. That being said, I woudl love to see the results from the test. Does anybody know the Red Camera used in the blog? What was the end result there. This should dovetail nicely into super-duper/max8 cameras...
