so. my film I shot in 2006. We shot using super16.

we shot 7 or 8 rolls of short stock 400' rolls. (these were telecined super cheap to miniDV tape for editing)

I have a friend who has a super16 projector....

So. I plan on setting that up. setting up my RED.... shooting a white wall while it projects....

Anyone do this before? good results? any tips?

should I zoom in to crop the super16 1.66:1 to the 16x9 of the RED 4K?

Mike

you will have problems with the parallax - so i would recommend projecting it onto a screen (like opera) from behind (rear projection) and put the red in front of the screen.

martin

home/school type 16mm projectors do not run at a solid 24fps ..
with camera running at solid 24fps and projector not running at 24fps you'll get a slight flicker ...
if you can sync the projector & camera that will do away with the flicker ...
if you rent a projector that sync's to a camera =in the end it would be less to telecine the finished project to HD ( hard drive) ...

donatello is right - have you considered using a steenbeck instead of a projector?

Surely a good telecine to ProRes on a RANK is a better call than this? I doubt you'll get a better looking image than the DV telecine you have already with this method.

HD telecine

HD telecine

I've used several places to do S16 telecine.

Movie Lab has a new HD process that is quite inexpensive and you get ProRes back on your hard drive.

www.movielab.com

If you want full on frame by frame scan http://www.framediscreet.com/ can do that for you.

I've also had good luck with standard def transfers from http://alphacine.com/ in Seattle.

Good luck,

Steve

If you are going to project the negative, my programs CC has enough range to give color balance. You output REDLOG TIF (16bit 48bpp) from REDCINE of the R3D files. You may need an 80 series filter to center the RGB histograms.

Single frame the projector and camera for better results, DANCINES.EXE (tm) automates that and works with DSLR etc. You can see a Super16 example here,

This will not work with Negative film (which Im guessing you used- not to mention it can damage the film) even if you used reversal or made prints it still wont look as good as it should just recording it off of a wall.

If you want it to look as good as possible and you dont want to spend a ton of money (and your comfortable color-correcting yourself- which I think you are):

Have everything transfered on something like a Spirit 4K to 2K DPX LOG files in realtime. Then just re-cut the footage and now you will have a real "digital negative" to work with. Call around and you can probably find a good rate- if you need a recommendation send me a PM.

Of course you could always just transfer to HD somewhere too, but the cost might end up being a wash with all of the corrections and reel changes- this way you get ultra sharp LOG files that you can correct yourself.

Just please dont ruin your film! ; )

hey Hunter. thanks for the concerns.... ya they are normal negative rolls...

so why did I think this would work?

I gues film it and reverse it in post?

We did the transfer at Alphacine in seattle straight to miniDV to pay the absolute cheapest to get editing..... I have always wanted to do a 2k scan some day..... and was some how thinking that shooting RED off a wall would work.....

Mike

Hello Mike,

I will transfer your footage, scanned at 2k. and give you back dpx log files. or apple pro rez if you really want. check out my company at http://www.opticalcameraservice.com
we have high speed film scanners and film recorders. your project will look best if i scan it to 2k. if you only have 7 reels or so. i will scan your footage for $500.00 a roll for s-16 neg. Let me know if you are interested or can find any better prices for 2k/4k scans.

John very neat. I think you were talking to my friend Nathan yesterday...

the project was shot super cheap... so I'm looking for some weird no cost R3D 4K filming the wall solution....

But I would love to at some point film out some of the RED I have shot all over the world

sounds good mike. grab some of your best red footage. and i will be happy to shoot you out a few minute test. and get you into a screening. nothing beats seeing footage on the big screen.
talk to you soon.
