Hey.

We are shooting a TV series and are worried about some issues we saw on our first day of shooting. In this frame there is some "ugly" lines in the unfocused part behind the actor. When I try to compensate with contrast curve it just gets worse.

Lens: Super Speed T1.3
4K 2:1 RC28
25fps

Any suggestions/tips on how to keep unfocused parts as smooth as possible?
The lines don't show that much in this compressed jpeg.

replies much appreciated!

I just think you're seeing banding on an 8 bit monitor. I wouldn't worry too much about it. The .r3d files have plenty of bit depth and there are software filters to get rid of them if you need to finish on 8 bit. A bit of noise or grain will hide it as well.

google "T_Deband"

I've experienced this as well, in the following situations.

1. The LCD has a lot of banding, especially in the out of focus areas. This appears to be the result of truncating the 12 bit signal down to 8 bit display. A little scary at first, but once you know why it's doing it, you can get by it.

2. For some reason I have seen this in some of the proxies while using in FCP. I'm still investigating this. I don't think it makes sense because the proxies are not 8 bit from what I understand. Someone correct me if I'm off here. I'll be doing more tests to see if this happens with other footage.

8 bit, I hate LCDs because of that

Yes, that has nothing to do with your lens...thats banding. Is this from the quicktimes? Are you rendering in h264?

Im rendering ProResSQ.

Thank you all for replies!
