Hi Everyone,

A scene from my next film requires me to get a shot of the sun. My DP (the lovely and talented Christopher Barrett) and I could not get a clean image of the sun without the grid of red dots that I've learned is flare from the Low Pass Filter.

Does anyone have any pointers on how to minimize it?

Thanks,
Aemilia

If you get enough ND and keep it open (f8 or wider?) it theoretically shouldn't show up. I was under the impression (from RED, if memory serves) that it happens when you stop down to f16+, and light reflects off the OLPF and then off the lens' rear element (which is then recorded).. Again, only when it's stopped down since the source/sun gets pin-pointed enough to actually reflect off of everything.

So, yeah, just try shooting at f5.6 or something and see if that helps (update this thread with your results if possible).

If you haven't already tried it, the Schneider 750 Tru-Cut Hot Mirror filter is worth a look. It doesn't address the fundamental problem, but by cutting some IR on the way in, it should reduce it. Without testing I don't know how much relief it will offer, but in combination with a wider stop it might be enough. Let us know how it goes.

Cheers - #19
