Hi all. . .

We've suddenly been getting frame drops or the dreaded POST hangs about one in every four or five shots with our M-X RED. We are shooting on drives, and I believe we've experienced the very same thing with 16 gig cards, as well.

Shooting RC32 to 320 gig drive and 8-gig CF cards. We were shooting indoors in air-conditioned comfort. BUT we won't be come this Friday!

Are the dropped frames (sometimes over a hundred in one small take) likely related to the POST hangs? What is the likely cause? What can I do?

Stephen

If you find the time take a look at this thread and the threads I quoted in it:

I think my technical english is not good enough to understand all what your saying.
But normally dropped or corrupt frames are caused by the offloading Pipeline. Change out the hardwarecomponents, Cables, drives, readers, maybe even the Computer youre using. If it appears on drives and CF cards and the media on those is fine, what you'd need to find out, maybe by playing back those clips in camera than it's definetly happening after the recording and the cause could be anything that is part off that offloading pipeline

Hi there, Gunleik. . .

I need proxy generation, as that is our workflow. We used to have the POST hang with cards, turned out to be a bad CF reader, but we never had them with the drive before.

The dropped frames is an entirely new issue for us, and even more troublesome.

Interesting. . . do our drives need to be updated???? This is news to me.

Stephen

And if you send tech support a log file from each of your drives, tech support can tell if they have been updated to current specs.

As Stuart and Brent suggested, please send me a .log file from that camera to:

sean at red dot com

And I will get back to you with results ASAP.
Thanks,

POST hangs..

POST hangs..

Hi Stephen,

Can you define your POST hang- problem?
We had a problem on a featurefilm project, where the camera sometimes
stayed in the POST- phase after recording and we had to reboot.
It turned out that the clips with this error weren't recorded.
We had the problem with drives and cf-cards!

We came to the conclusion that it had got to do with external
timecode (and genlock) and the opengate- mode. After we turned
off opengate it didn't occure again.

We had the same problems ( Post hangs , recording couldnt be stopped / camera crashed ). After unmarking " open gate " the problems "seem" to be gone. We will get into some
serious testing if open gate really was the problem. Can somebody explain
" open gate " to me anyway. Its one of the functions I never paid to much attention to..

P.S.
Its the same with "max" .....resolution

Thanks Arne

Intriguing. .. I'll have to see if we had open gate checked or not. After talking with RED, they are of the opinion that my drive needed to be updated. Since it was not serviced since originally purchased in 2008 (April or May) it certainly makes sense that it might need it. But this "open gate" issue seems to be something else entirely.

I find it hard to believe that open gate could be the issue, as that is a viewfinder issue only, I believe. Very strange. However, the machine is complex, and so maybe there is some really odd connection there.

Thanks to everyone for helping out.

Hi

Generating proxies is generally a 1-click procedure once you have backed up your files with clipfinder, RCX etc...

But that's just me, and it have saved me a lot of hairpulling...

As to dropped frames... -:)

Dunno.

We've been shooting MX to old drives without problems, BUT also first I've heard of updating drives - can someone point to more data on this? How/what/when/where?

We have had the issues you point to when we had a bad drive cable, FWIW, as well.

open gate...

open gate...

@arne:

you'll find an explenation on page 59 in the manual.
It doubles the sensor readout- frequency and allows to
view the image on lcd and evf in doubled frequency.
(at a projekt framerate of 24 fps, you can monitor with
48 fps) This reduces the effect of motion stutter for viewing
(not for capturing), especially when you pan through a scene.

But there are same limitations with the use of opengate:
- not available in Varispeed/Ramp- mode
- not available for 50 & 59,94 fps project framerates
- video genlock may not be available
- 360- degree shutter is not available

@stephen:
It's not only a viewfinder- issue, because it doubles the
sensor framerate. When we had the post hang- problem,
we did a lot of testing to find out reason for the error.
We had the problem with 2 different cameras (M & MX),
with cf- cards and drives. After we turned out opengate
the problem didn't come again. It seems to be bad interaction
beetween genlock and the opengate- mode (see also manual).

dropped frames/ proxies?

dropped frames/ proxies?

hi gunleik,

what has the proxie- generation to do with
dropped frames?

Gerhard

No, nothing. Gunliek was just saying that there was obviously something else going on with that issue.

Thanks for all of your help!

Stephen
