  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Subdirectories

Bleck. Don't touch the folder structure.

Don't do it.

Computers are much more magical when they are fed the folder structures that they are expecting to see.

The reason .r3d files are in a .rdc folder is that, once the shot goes on long enough, it breaks it up into multiple .r3d files that, combined, make the whole shot.

If you just dump all your .r3d files into one place, you no longer have any easy delineation between one shot and the next. When each shot is in it's own .rdc folder, BAM, there's your shot: the entire contents of that folder.

If you're being forced to point a program at the .r3d instead of the .rdc folder or even the .rdm folder containing all the .rdc folders, then you should really try to move away from that program; it's promoting shoddy file management and bad habits and will only bite you in the ass the further down that road that you go.

The DIT side of me is literally hurt by the idea of ripping the .r3d files out of their homes. This is asking for trouble. Lots and lost of trouble.

I have no experience with Vegas, but a quick google search for "Vegas r3d" lead me to this whitepaper: http://dspcdn.sonycreativesoftware.com/whitepapers/vegaspro10_red.pdf

From a quick glance at it, it does not look like you would have to change the folder structure.

You might be better off posting this question in the post production section.

while its possible to take them out, its generally speaking a bad idea workflow wise for the above mentioned reasons...in avid for instance i can link to an "ama volume" which grabs them all at once off the card after I copy paste it to my external. I am not a vegas user, but perhaps if you dive deeper into the red workflow in vegas you will find a similar feature? I know its a pain to link to each r3d one at a time, I was doing it myself that way for a while before someone showed me the ama volume trick, which is awesome, way less clicking if the mags are full of clips!!!
