  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi maybe I'm just missing something here but:

I just got my first chance to test out my cam since I got it back from the CF/sound update, and something is very different with the way my LCD is displaying feed from the camera.

I know you get some stutter/strobe when panning in 24 fps, I shot for the last year in 24fps, but now I am seeing a huge amount stutter/strobing when I do any kind of move, no matter how fast/slow. It almost feels like the camera isn't displaying the images fast enough.

I noticed that build 17 changed up the shutter options, and I'm running in "normal" mode 24fps 1/48sec.

When I turn on "open gate" (upping the LCD refresh rate) the image is vastly better, but still has some stutter.

EDIT> I just tried on 23.98, 24 , 25, 29.97 fps and the stutter/strobing is just as bad on all of them with out open gate on.

Is this normal now with the upgrade and build 17?
I never had this issue before the update on build 16.
:help:

O.k,
So I updated to build 18 and it didn't make any real difference.
I shot some test footage to show what I mean, the stutter/strobe is less noticeable on the compressed footage than the original.

Am I going crazy? I'm pretty sure this isn't what the footage looked like before the upgrade.

The shutter is on "normal" 180 degrees (24fps 1/48th) I did a pan at the ASC recommended speed for 17mm lens of 9.9secs for 90Deg pan, and it still stutters.

Can you guys take a look and let me know what you think?

Any one think the footage I posted looks odd?
Could really do with some feedback on this before I see about sending my RED back to get looked at.. again.

It was snowing, and LCDs can act really hinky when they are cold..........

Hmm.. I'm not convinced, it looks worse full res. No one thought the moving hand had a pronounced judder to it?
I think I'll try and find a local cam owner to do a side by side comparison.

Thanks for the feed back though, maybe I am going crazy.

There are apocryphal reports that strobing got slightly worse with Build 16 (I'm not so sure - it's hard to be scientific about it unless you're able to repeat a before & after test of exactly the same subject/situation/conditions). I can't see a reason why strobing would get worse in between firmware builds? Obviously the strobing issue looks a lot worse on wider lenses & in high contrast situations (e.g. dark object against a bright background). Interestingly a lot of the recent camera tests which productions have been doing with our camera have been to assess how acceptable the Red strobing issue is to them and their needs. I think that can be a bit meaningless unless you do a side-by-side with a rival camera since strobing is a universal issue. Going to print also seems to slightly take the edge off any strobing.
