  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Student Short - Shot on Red

Christopher,

first off, I hope you sorted out the RAID issue!

Can you speak on the grading tools used?

When you get the footage, be sure to get it up on sKarlets! I'd appreciate anyone with footage to upload to sKarlets. Open for uploads for a week now and...:whistling:

The grabs look great... looking forward to seeing some footage

Hey guys, thanks for the great responses!

I'm on a feature shoot (shooting in South Africa, on RED. I'm the DIT, but more details to follow) at the moment so I won't have time till after christmas to post some footage. (Right now I'm back for half a day then off again.)

With regards to my RAID problem, it has since been sorted out and luckily I got all my data back...phew. Anyway that caused such a delay to my work plans. Grrrrr!

Graded using a mix of Premiere Pro's native effects and MB Looks.

I'll drop some footage in around Christmas time.

Thanks for the support.

Looks good, Christopher.

Hey Christopher!

Stuff looks great!

Have you tried the 3-strip process in MB Looks? It does some very nice color separation. Digital material often tends to have an overall tint to it. You have to counter balance the effect with post contrast and gamma, but with a little tweaking you can get some nice results. I just took the liberty to play around with a few of your screen grabs. Might not at all be the look you intend, but just to show the effect it does. I think the separation of the different colors adds more depth to the image.

Hey Benni,

Yes I have played a lot with various effects in MB Looks; fantastic set of tools. The screen grabs look good that you posted. Those initial frames of mine were just posted quickly...

Also CineForm has since added support for 8 bit effects (in PPRO) which means that I can use MB Looks as Active Metadata, which I could not use before and required rendering, in a realtime workflow in HD. That means I apply a MB Look effect to the clips as a 32 bit LUT and work in realtime; which I intend to do now!!

I have since onlined to 1920 x 1080 CineForm HD 4:2:2 files (those grabs are 1024 x 512) and I have tweaked all the grading. When I put that together I mainly wanted a "cold" more monotone look to the film. However the film (in a not so finished form) was screened at a theater during an awards evening and seeing it on the big screen in front of an audience I felt the film had enough going for it in terms of performance and music and the grading could be warmed up throughout the film. The character leads a dull life and I tended to want to emphasize that more from a color perspective.

Having stepped away from the content for more than a month you gain a more objective perspective and that is usually a good thing. Having outside feedback also helps so thanks it is appreciated from my side.:)

On that note the film won 3 awards at the film school awards evening, Best Film, Best Directing, and Best Script.

Hey Christopher! you promised you will upload a video :D where is your promise :) it was a long time :)

Coming soon... ha ha. :sarcasm: Just finishing off a feature I'm working on at the moment. We wrap on the 9th Jan and then I'll be digging into post-production 100% on my film again. Since I am doing all the post work it takes a while longer...

Very Cool, I am eager to see the Video as well :-)
From where did you hire the camera from?
Just asking cos I too am from SA and have wondering about hiring, although I don't have a budget as yet.

Phill

Video has arrived!

Video has arrived!

Finally... some video for you guys!! :bye2:

Sorry for the delay, I am in need of help with the color grading hence the time delays...

This is an extract of a scene, please feel free to post all comments good or bad - thanks.

The video is compressed but only through Vimeo, but it is better than nothing.

As I mentioned before the music is original and was composed by Philip Curran http://www.philipcurran.com/

It was a pleasure to work with him, even though we never personally met.

Have a look at his page if you are interested, he is nice to work with and a real talent.

Is this student work? It looks excellent for student work, well done!

Upload some more footage.
