  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sts-122

FINALLY. I don't have a computer capable of running these R3Ds so someone is going to have to confirm they are the right ones. Here you go...

http://www.redrelay.net/owners/0206/

Just downloaded STS122MichaelSHastings2-3.R3D and it works perfectly!

Very impressive stuff!! Thanks!

EDIT: There is a sudden exposure change in frame 1930. Any info about what it is?

EDIT2: The NASA Chopper shot works without a problem too and if i exclude the skewing i found it to be very impressive because of it's dynamic range.

Aqua, I think there may be some clipping in that massive fireball... :)

I love the footage. Holy cow that thing can haul ass! I mean I've seen footage of launches before but something about this footage makes it feel more massive and 100x more impressive because it's not being cut between 10 camera angles. Wow is all I can say. I've always wanted to see one in person...

Did you grade that, Red Guy?

Great stuff!

I had a play with the grade, I hope you like it (click on the thumbnails for full size 48MB TIFF files):

Cheers!

Yes, I wanted something more than a normal look. What lens was used
to shoot this? Nice work.

Next launch is at night!
March 11, 2:28 A.M. ET.
Really big surprise and spectacular theater.

NIGHT LAUNCH!
MISSION: STS-123 ENDEAVOUR
DATE: TARGETED FOR MARCH 11, 2008
TIME: 2:28 A.M. ET
Space Shuttle Endeavour will light up the night sky on March 11th. It is a rare and spectacular experience and only the second night launch in over five years. The crew will deliver the Japanese Kibo Logistics Module and the Canadian Dextre robotics system to the International Space Station. Come see a night shuttle launch, where dawn comes twice in the same day. Tickets are still available for purchase.

I used a Zeiss 300mm/F4 tele in Contax/Yashica mount with an adapter on the Birger EOS mount. This would be in "dumb" mode, that is the lens is manual focus and manual iris only and the EOS mount (via the adapter) is just being used to hold the lens on. These Contax/Yashica (often seen as C/Y) mount lenses are very nice as they are fairly common on the used market and typically quite a bit cheaper than the ZF (Nikon mount) versions and the focus ring turns in normal cine direction unlike Nikon lenses that turn in the opposite direction. Besides being optically excellent they also have a very long focus "throw", like cine lenses. I also have a C/Y Zeiss 50mm F1.4 as my "superspeed" and manual backup lens. That is if you are committed to the Birger mount with Canon EF lenses - that don't have an iris ring - it might be good to have one or two of these manual lenses as emergency backups.

The Zeiss C/Y 50mm F1.4 sells for about $275-300 used in top condition and the 300 about $500-600.

I like the grade, red guy, but could someone encode Paul's grade (or something similar) into mov format?

First off, I'm not being critical - I haven't had time to do much with the file myself. I tried a quick one initially and didn't have much luck. So would like to see someone that has a little more expertise work on it.

The overall cast seems off and the trees have no detail on the REDGUY mov. I think paul's grade tiff is more what it looked like. Seems like a little sharpening could be added.

Have at it guys! that was the reason for putting it out there.

Lost charger and battery

Lost charger and battery

Kevin: feel free to post photos. Nice to meet you out there.

The one bummer of the day is I realized yesterday, when unpacking my gear bag, that I had left my RED charger and a battery plugged into the electrical outlet tree behind the stands.

I am trying to figure out who to call (my friend is calling one of his contacts) to see if they could check if it might still be there,) or if there is a lost and found. Chances are slim of recovery but as you know it is one of those media situations where it is so wide open and everyone is vulnerable that people sort of go out of their way to look out for each other and resist the temptation to walk off with things - so maybe I will get lucky. If you know anybody to call let me know.

BTW the photo you posted is about the same shot I got with the 300.

If nothing else, I can look for it Tuesday night when I'm there for STS-123.

Dave

With your RED, Dave?
Night launch will be spectacular!
Dont forget that landing is awesome too.

I'm trying to export using REDCINE but all I get is either black or a freeze frame!

Also tried to export from REDCINE. All I got was a freeze frame.

Abu, please report it in the REDCINE Bugs Thread so that RED can take note of this pivotal feature still not working properly.

Oh yes, I know. I went for a sci-fi look. That took 2 hours to render to H.264
Maybe I will try a "normal" one later tonight. Thanks for the lens info.

Miltos- Yes we did change the exposure manually from F22 to F32(I think). So yes that was caused by me. Mike was shooting, and told me to make a slight adjustment. That was not caused by the camera.

Lost charger and battery was found.

Lost charger and battery was found.

Lost charger and battery was found by one of the electricians. George (status) was going to pick it up but was there on Sunday so I'm still waiting to get them to ship it down to me in FLL.
