I'm looking to purchase a "Streak Filter" for music videos. Anyone familiar with this? And any idea where I could get a good one?

Theres the Vantage (http://www.vantagefilm.com/en/news/index_28.shtml) streak filters and the new Schneider True Streak filters which aren't out yet but will be soon (http://trademarks.justia.com/858/57/true-streak-85857516.html). Vantage is extremely expensive and not even sure you can buy them.

Is there a reason Streak filters are so expensive? Is it not just an uncoated piece of glass with stripes of colour "gel" evenly spaced? How are they more than decent HMNDs? Smaller batches?

There is some Mad-Scientist/Cheap Trick stuff you can do etching lines in a piece or glass or a UV filter in front of lens and putting fishing line or monofilaments behind the lens..
...just remember vertical lines and marks will result in horizontal lines in your picture.

They are a low-usage specialty item, plus the better ones are more than lines etched in glass, they are embedded rods or monofilament of some kind, dyed for the color cast.

It looks like it too.

Some cool effects if that is what you want, but that doesn't look like an anamorphic flare besides being horizontal.

I might guess that Optefex is now part of the Schneider line. Ira Tiffen who owned optefex now works for schneider. The colors, and densities (spacings) seem to be the same. Anyhow, the Optefex filters are great, I own a few of them and can vouch for them and Ira.

Really, they joined Tiffen? I remember a long time ago, at Panavision, demoing the Tiffen vs. the Optefex filters and (at the time, at least) the Optefex blew it away... the Tiffen was so weak, like it was more of a mistake than a real flare or streak. But maybe they're using the Optefex specs now, or something.

Ira Tiffen parted ways with Tiffen a while back

Optefex no longer sells and the new Schneider True Streak filters are coming, which is now run by Ira Tiffen, so the assumption is it's a rebranded and possibly improved Optefex streak filter. Schneider is sending me a couple of these in the next week or two so we shall see. Tiffen does not have a streak filter any longer either. So it will be Vantage and Schneider who have the only glass in front of lens filters for streak effects.

Ira Tiffen used to have his own company called "Optefex" in which he made custom filters. He recently joined the Schneider team and perfected his design. I've used the filters before and they work great. However, its important to note that unless you're shooting a tighter lens (40+) the embedded cylinders will be clearly visible in your shot if focused anywhere near the CF point of the lens...

Hi there. Try 'Filter Gallery' in NYC. Talk to Stan. He etches them himself and they're the industry standard here. Hope this helps.

I shot the video with the Asian girl (My girlfriend) pole dancing (her apartment). The filters came from Stan at the filter gallery in NYC. Great guy to rent from, and has anything you need filter wise.
