Did we forget one? Stranger things is amazing and looks gorgeous. You can read the red epic image from far away.

Everyone should check it out.

Absolutely loved everything about this show.

Tim Ives killed it, as usual. I saw a post on cinematography.net from Manu Delpech that said "shot on Red Dragon and Leica lenses (confirmed to me by Tim Ives)."

IMDb info is not updated. Says epic, doesn't matter really. Very good content.

i was surprised when i saw leicas as there are many anamorphic flares coming from all the flash lights, maybe a vantage filter thing or done in post.

I thought it was 2.00:1, similar to House of Cards.

The colorist, Skip Kimball at Technicolor/Hollywood, did a really kick-ass job on the show. It's rare to see this wide a variety of different styles in one series: everything from very cold and weird to very warm and natural, to desaturated and grim. Really beautiful stuff, lots of dynamic range. I was convinced it was shot on anmorphic glass at one point, but in later episodes it was clear those were added in post. But it looks tremendous.

It's also a great show for story and performances, too. I have no problem that it echoes a lot of the great fantasy & sci-fi films of that era (CE3K, E.T., Poltergeist, Altered States), plus some dashes of X-Files and Fringe. I think it works fine as an affectionate homage, and it's original enough to thoroughly hold my attention.

It is not 2:1. It was shot 6K FF (aspect ratio of approx. 1.94:1) and finished in "full 4K," which is 4096x2160, or an aspect of approx. 1.9:1.

interesting because on my 4k 16x9 tv there is just a little black bar on the top and bottom

Great show. The 80's film look in a lot of it is so well done. The "Twilight Zone" type story works well despite some inconsistencies... so what. I really loved the look of it. It's a great study in what's possible with such an artistic Dragon grade. I loved the camera and edit in it.

David Harbour is fantastic - as usual. That guy is one kick ass actor - in everything. I wasn't loving Wynonna Ryder in the beginning but she grew on me. I think I was pulled by a bias to the body of her work being an ingenue. She's so slight. It took a while for the Mom thing to kick in for me. She won me in the second half, though. Great kids too.

Anyone know what filtration was used on this show? We were thinking maybe some Kipper Tie OLPFS?

The blooms on highlights are incredible.

So it's 1.90 instead of 2.00? Well, I was close. That's a goofy aspect ratio. I would've said go with 1.85 since that one actually exists as a release format. (I don't dispute that there are no rules for this stuff when it comes to Netflix, and that the client is always right.)

Tell Skip it looked tremendous. You guys should definitely submit an episode of the show for an HPA Award (or whatever they're called these days).

I see different things on different episodes. For the first couple, they had me convinced they were using anamorphic glass because of the blue anamorphic lens flares, but I suspect those were added in post. Later episodes looked spherical to me. It was still beautiful stuff, really nice. My guess is they either went with a 1/4 ProMist during production or added some glow in post.

There's also tons and tons of smoke and mist on set, so that has a way of catching the light from certain angles that's pretty evocative. You can't fake that in post, certainly not easily and not on a TV schedule.

BTW, the stark black-set scenes (what I would call the "Altered States World") were also interesting: very sharp, no diffusion, very contrasty, but also very detailed. What's great about it is that again, there were so many different looks in the show. I really loved that, and it's a show whose images have stuck in my head for days afterward... and I don't say that often.

.

Well, you may think it's "goofy", but it's a recognized standard, as well as one of two accepted delivery formats for Netflix. They accept 4096x2160 ("full 4K") or 3840x2160 (UHD), although they "prefer" the "full 4K."
