We're doing a project which requires that we extract four 16x9 images from the 4k frame. We can do editorial in 2K, but how would we extract the 4 images if FCP cannot online 4K? I think we can get 4K prores quicktimes out of compressor, but we usually use that for time lapses shot with 5DII. I don't know how that would work with R3D. Any ideas?

use Redcine and export frame grabs

I would edit 2k/1080, then color and conform in Color. Color can render out 4K ProRes or DPX.

At that point I'd take those resulting renders into AE somehow and export your crops.

sorry if my original post was confusing. when i wrote "images" i meant frame. it's not a screengrab, i need to crop out four 16x9 frames from the 4k frame. but i think joe's idea of using quicktime to export to a video format may work, i'll have to try it when i get in.

Why not use Clipfinder?

That's what Brandon and I were answering to. Export from a RAW 4K frame to TIFF, etc. I believe it is something like a 60mb and a 16-bit file as best res? Not a simple screen res. grab. You can crop in Photoshop or in RedCine itself... you can select whatever aspect crop you wish.

Do you mean individual frames, or 4 seperate 16x9 Videos (e.g if you were using them to play out using a multiprojector setup like Watchout!)? If that's the case Nate suggestion is the way to go I'd say.

REDAlert works good. I've seen gamma shifts with the QT export option though. Supposedly SL 10.6 fixes that but your mileage may vary.

Yes, it's video. Nate's on the right track, but I think we're going to go down a simpler path. We'll convert into 4K Prores via proxies, then use apply several alpha mattes to the resulting Prores file, thus outputting our 1920 crops. To actually render out the crop in any program would be render purgatory. Quicktime is pretty good for quick cheats like this. Although there is a risk of gamma shift, it is worth it for the savings in render time.
