Does anybody know what is causing this effect? I was shooting on a RED Epic with Zeiss Ultra primes.

Its the sensor pattern. Were you shooting closed down?

This happens on a lot of cameras when you point it at a light source and close down on the lens. To avoid it use ND and don't close down so much.

polka dots!

When shooting with a bright source (the sun) going into the lens, sometimes you can get light bouncing internally i believe off the sensor to the OLPF and then back to the sensor. Something that happens with multiple camera systems, and when stopped down with your iris... Adding ND's and opening up should solve the issue.
