  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Stouffer of Mysterium-X...

If we expose so we have 6 stops over and 6 stops under, what ISO would we have to set the camera to?
Assuming, as usual, that with increased ISO you lose some dynamic range.

Here is the Frankie Stouffer:

What about the DR on the Scarlet 2/3 ? How would you compare it with the Red One's ?
Thanks

Original Mysterium (Frankie) sensor DR Stouffer chart

About 12.2 stops of DR at Mysterium-X sensor

Graeme's comment was 12 stops, but I'll let him jump in here.

Any methodology you choose... it is 1 1/2 stops greater than the original Mysterium sensor.

Jim

M-X has "1 1/2 stops greater than the original Mysterium sensor".

RED Team gave exactly what the most of us was asking for.

Thanks!

Nope. Same DR. Higher resolution in EPIC (5K) than RED ONE upgrade (4.5K).

Jim

Sorry! I mixed that up with the post in the other thread about the maximal ISO you can shoot with your modified RED ONE right now.

What's really incredible to me is that there seems to be very little noise floor. Looks great, especially compared to the RED One Stouffer.

Ok, here's some details....

Shot the Stouffer wedge as normal, using Jim's Mysterium-X test camera. Used the 18-50 zoom, F8. I took the R3D and read out the raw values for each of the 41 wedges. I can view a "corrected" image while reading out the raw values, and the black surround which holds the Stouffer on the backlight was actually very slightly darker than wedge 41, the darkest wedge. This difference although visible with an extreme image development it doesn't actually show up in the above plot.

So although the shadow tail of the graph looks flat, there's in reality a very small gradient there that does show the minutest of detail in that shadow.

Similarly, at the top, you can see a small slope before the data clips.

Graeme

And to add, the Stouffer wedge is calibrated, so when the graph is plotted I use the calibration optical density rather than a strict 1 wedge = 1/3 stop.

Graeme

Stouffer 4110 is a transmitive step chart that is back lit, every step has a visual density, Is like a series of ND's in one chart (in the case of stouffer 4110 in a 13 2/3 stops range), Jim is showing a 12,2 stops of DR in the stuffer 41 step chart, for M-X sensor...!

It will be great if you post a 16 bit linear tiff frame...

Well done Jim.

Hi Evangelos,

Is that 12.2stops measured the same way as the 11.3 stops from Red One, just trying to work out how much improvement there has been.

Stephen

The measurement methodology is similar. The actual chart used is different. How the graph is plotted is different, and I think more accurately now. Neither really show what you'd call "usable dynamic range" Stephen as what you are plotting are single points, not bars that show the spread of values on each wedge.

Subjectively, the noise is an awful lot lower on the new Mysterium-X sensor than the original Mysterium.

Now I'm totally impressed and seduced with that result. :emote_happyhappy:

Almost ready for tomorrow to sent my RED camera in California for that M-X upgrade.

12 Stops of DR and ISO800 puts the Mysterium-X on par with Arri's new sensors, from what I read. Pretty slick, considering those new Arris are starting at $75000...

Dear Jim,

Is the MONSTRO sensor still on track to have two more stops over Mysterium-X?

Thanks!
George

Yes. But Monstro is on the same delay schedule as the rest of the program.

Jim

how about a hint at mid-month on the delay schedule - is it roughly a) a few months from now, b): 6 months/post NAB c:) a year from now?
