I've just been playing around in storm a bit and thought I'd share some of my very initial thoughts.

It Looks VERY promising. A bit of an unusual interface for me, but I'm getting used to it. It seems stable. I LOVE the waveform as opposed to the Histogram. The XML import, export seems to work fairly well in my initial tests, although I did end up with some gaps in footage where I had dissolves.

Is there a simple way to copy a grade from one clip to a other clips in the bin? Often I get a grade I like and then simply want to copy it to all the other takes of that scene.

Last thought. I HATE the licensing scheme. Especially since one of Foundry's selling points is the app can be used on-set and in post production! Let me DO that! I may want to use the app on one of 3 computers, but not at the same time!

I think the software is very useful as it stands and will get even better with time.

I've already written to the Foundry about their licensing scheme since I'm in the same boat as you and do not have the budget of Industrial Light and Magic. I've yet to get any response. Many of us work on set with a laptop and switch to a more powerful desktop back in the studio. I feel we should be able to use the software non-simultaneously on more than one computer.

+1 on the licensing. I'd be fine with a USB dongle, if that made them feel safe. I work on location for days with a MacBook, then come back to my office where I work on a macpro workstation. I never use them both at the same time, and this licensing scheme doubles the price of the software.

Is there any way to move the license easily as you need it?

I get an answer today from the foundry about moving the licence from a computer to another. It is possible, at no charge, but you have to fill a paper and send it to them.
I have asked them the question : "how long shall I wait before getting the licence premision back" ?

Definitly, it is not an adapted licence for our use.

Olivier

The lisencing definitely sounds like it is an issue if the lisence cannot follow the project within the same organisation. That's sort of counterproductive to the whole "hub" idea.

And for larger shops, a site lisence will be needed, as the computers gets re-assigned depending on needs and production schemes, and thus re-installed remotely from servers with neccesary software, be it as an "editing", "DIT" "VFX" or "graphics" station.

I dunno, but is it possible to verufy lisence without being online?
Our mobile DIT stations mostly aren't.

But Storm surely will get there!

Cheers!

Someone from the Foundry got in touch with me because of my earlier post. I've been told that Storm product management will respond soon with a clearer answer (they are busy with Storm Day at RED today). This being said, the response I received didn't bode well for us users. Perhaps if enough people spoke out here on the forum...

If I used the software concurrently on 2 computers then I'd gladly buy 2 licenses, but it never happens; I go out in the field on my MacBook Pro then transfer to my MacPro. I've been doing this for years. Why I should pay for 2 licenses? This effectively doubles the cost for everyone who works this way (which I suspect is many of us).

What are your feelings on the subject?

The Foundry offers both floating licenses that are activated by a dongle, or node locked licenses. So they already have exactly what you are looking for.

cheers

I agree, there are millions of people who use pirate software on a daily basis, we are NOT one of them. My mantra has always been, if I make money out of software then I happily pay for it, however the licensing system used by many software companies punishes the honest rather than those who choose to use pirate software.

on one hand, I agree - on the other hand, the software is dirt cheap, they priced it to sell it, and they're going to have to make their money somewhere....

Colin, unless I'm mistaken, there doesn't seem to be this option for Storm as they told me they would only offer "nodelocked" licenses. I wouldn't be here talking about it if there were a dongle option.

Meryem, although $375 USD is not particularly expensive, nor is it "dirt cheap" as you say. I should be able to pay for a license for non-concurrent use. I'm not here complaining about the price, but about the double-dipping. I doubt their profit policy is based on forcing customers to buy 2 copies of their software. I think it's more a question of The Foundry not having really thought out how this software will be used compared to their other offerings. People don't usually 'travel' on site with their NukeX licenses....

My goal here is not to get a freebie, but to have a license option that is adapted to my real needs - and I suspect also - the real needs of many of us.

STORM Licensing

Greetings Gang,

I apologise for the delay in responding. I've been a bit distracted the last few days, but have been following the posts on this thread (as well as here http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=55879).

I don't have an official response to make on this subject today. We are talking it over internally and I wish to speak to you all to clearly understand all of the concerns. I'm confident we can come to a fair conclusion.

We wish to be as transparent as possible. These are the main issues that I see being discussed:

  1. STORM License transfer: We support this today for users who purchase STORM and need to move it to a new machine. Our support team can help you with this support@thefoundry.co.uk.
  2. Multiple STORM deployments on a single license: Example Scenario = 1 STORM license that could be used on 2 Machines non-concurrently.
  3. STORM site license: Users who wish to purchase STORM in bulk. We do not have an option for this in our online store, but we will certainly entertain discussions. Please contact sales@thefoundry.co.uk.

If I am correctly interpreting the discussions, item 2 is the primary concern and is what I'd like to discuss with each of you. Please feel free to contact me directly brickel@thefoundry.co.uk.

More to come,
Paul

Thanks for listening Paul!

A great many of us will use the software either on-set, or in the post setting, but not at the same time. It would be VERY advantageous to have that capability.

Cheers,

Bobby

Thanks Paul. #2 and #3 are very important. I'm confident in you guys though. I've been a long time Nuke user, so I know what you guys are all about.

Great Software... purchased today... license option 2 or 3 sounds interesting...
Please add a 0-1023 or 0-100% black-white clipping preset in the preference pane...
An option to be settings compatible with RCX would be also nice... I'm currently in the situation that I do the one-light on set and the post is processing with RCX but want to do it with storm....

thx

So yesterday was a perfect example of how the current license managment doesn't work for field production.

My macpro is dead in the water... logic board is toast. There is a form to transfer the license, which needs to be FAXED and I can't pull the system id from a dead computer. Faxing in a form doesn't seem like the most expedient way to transfer a license

At the end of the day, it wasn't that big of a deal, I just ran redcine-x on my laptop for a day, but a cheap dongle would have fixed the issue in 5 seconds.

I know the thread is a little old, but I don't feel anything has moved forward the past 7 weeks. At the very least automate the activation/deactivation via internet. (it wouldn't have helped my issue, but its a step forward)

thanks,
matt

Looks like this is a bit of an old thread but, as I am also considering a purchase of Storm, I thought I'd voice my opinion. I am one of those people that NEVER pirates software; more often I buy software out of curiosity and then, if it doesn't meet my needs, I just abandon it. But I do always hate the idea of not being able to use the software I purchase in a way that works for me. Long story short, as a single user who wants access both on my MB Pro and my Mac Pro, I'd like to have this option without paying for two licenses. Just seems fair. Non-simultaneous, like a whole bunch of other apps, is perfect.

Just don't make me pay twice or, alternatively, cripple my use. I thought the market sort of settled this issue when everyone has been so willing to pay for music on iTunes because you have a pretty flexible use policy. It was before that, that people tended to illegally download songs. Make it easier to do the right thing and people will.

My two cents.

Greetings all,

I realise this thread seems like its gone stale. We are continuing to review our policy, the market landscape, and how any changes would effect our licensing infrastructure.

We are paying attention to what you are all saying and I hope to have a response soon.

Please feel free to contact me at paul.brickel@thefoundry.co.uk if you'd like to provide direct feedback.

Regards,
Paul
