  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

STORM by The Foundry

this looks freaking awesome. I hope they turn it into a full editing platform. nice simple interface , intuitive and powerful

I read they are in the future.

I'm freaked out that Peter does such great demo. And freaked out that the all of the scenes from the shibuya shoot are all playing in the STORM.

RR video output and desktop playback at the same time. Not even possible with REDCINE-X. The response speed on STORM is toooooo amazing.

Well done Peter and TF!

Just another option i have been using for the past year for edit, vfx and audio apps is the Mimo Touchscreen 7 inch monitor.
I thought it funny when Peter had his monitor which looked like the Mimo I had been using I have been doing the same thing with Logic,FCP and AE etc for a while but with touchscreen it makes it even better.
Here is the link to the Mimo site. The model I have is the Slider 720S

Enjoy

Jim,

I had this sitting around to display movie clip or plug-in window on Digital Performer, Peter found it and adopted it to use it for grading purposes :).

I freaked out because that was my big head in the demo I'll stick to sound & editing although I have been hitting the gym hard so I'm a little slimmer now LOL!:biggrinjester:

On a serious note great demo by Peter there's a lot more features I didn't know while playing with it at Musetex. Can't wait for the Bear (Peter) to get back to Japan so I can give Storm a serious workout now!

Actually, Nancy and I thought you look great, though.

Everybody, this is Lee, who helped us with acting in the demo footage and also did the sound mix.

Thank you Lee for all of your help.

No Problem! Looking forward to future projects with such a great production team and actors everything was top notch. Plus you have popcorn at the studio!
Oh I been a reduser for a while normally I'm in lurker mode just learning tip & tricks using red but I post a few times each year!

Peter rocked the presentation.

Nice App. I like the tagging logic. Scopes area of interest is a great tool and smart thinking. There are also few other things scopes could be used for. UI is nice and clean. The whole logic behind the app is great, IMO. Foundry is on the right track. Money very well spent.

Linear thinking regarding GUI access to picture controls and control stacking has good and bad sides. With picture control in mind (not just reviewing and organizing), negative factors come from being crippled with real time view and access to controls.

Seems like too many clicks are needed for switching and opening controls in this case. Being unable to see controls, person working with picture settings has to keep redundant numbers and sliders data in own mental RAM (both visual and numerical) instead of focusing on the image. More controls being visible and accessible allow quick glances and quick practical work.

Think of a painter having the brushes and colors in drawers, constantly taking them out and returning them back in, instead of simply having them on a large table...working with hundreds of canvases. What could help is a dedicated GUI for color work.

Foundry should make a full grading app, IMO.

Hrvoje,

Thank you for your report, I guess if TF would have different window presentation for the effects instead of stack seems to give choices to the users. Good observation.

Thanks Kaku.

Actually, my comments were based on the video coverage. If I had been on IBC this year there would be much more impressions and nitpicking. :)

It must have been really exciting :)

RED should bundle STORM with Epic and Scarlet and also get closer strategic partnership with The Foundry.

But maybe it's already done.

Hi Peter,

So is the UI configurable sort of like how Adobe provides the windows and tag coordination?

I guess if one knows how Nuke works then that is how it is?

In reality the UI flexibility is even more user-friendly then Nuke. You can have the UI as simple or as complex as You want to fit on any size of monitor(s). And You can save unlimited number of presets and recall them at will...

I will show You in detail when I get back to Tokyo on Thursday...

Peter

Looking forward to more info. Thank you Peter.

I love the Nuke UI more than words can describe so what you have just said gets me all hot and bothered ;) Hope The Foundry bring some of the great elements back over to Nuke as well.

wow. Great presentation Peter. At NAB I was under the impression that Storm was going to be substantially more expensive. If the $375us is correct it's a no brainer. Very promising.

I think most of us at NAB were confused about what STORM really was supposed to be. The Foundry was giving behind the curtains demos of STORM, but I was unable to see it -- just not in the right place at the right time when I did try.

The Foundry listens to the users and I think they felt their announced $1900 price point was probably too high. Although I can see the price go up as STORM's abilities increase over time. Some questions still remain about the pricing an licensing -- or maybe I missed the answers. Do we need to purchase separate licenses for each system or installation? If so, that makes a difference, I'll be wanting it on three systems myself.

The IBC video presentation looked great and answered most of the questions I've had about STORM. It looks great and looks to be a real bargain at $375. I still have questions regarding it's ability to integrate with Avid and Adobe. Lately, I only touch FCP if I have to sync up with the needs of a client. I'll be predominantly working in Adobe and Avid.

They said STORM has a goal to do everything and stay RAW, but also trying to be come a hub for other workflow, so Adode and Avid would not other things that they have to cover soon.
