  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Stop The Press!! Nvidia Quadro CX !!

there is also the issue of does the Mac driver support the SDI card and what functions does it offer.

Indeed.

I'm hoping Apple can get their act together and write drivers which will allow it to add to the real-time abilities of Color, among other things.

Am I right in thinking that a Quadro card with an SDI daughter-board takes up the space of three PCIe slots? If so that doesn't leave room for much else in a four slot Mac Pro.

There's a little trick you can do - because of the ribbon cable that connects the SDI daughter-board - I'm gonna post pics, etc.

I have been redesigning/building my blog - OffhollywoodBuzz.com from scratch - should be up within a few days - I'll throw an announcement up on OFF TOPIC when she's live -

I don't know about you guys but I'd throw up to $5K at a card that allowed accelerated processing. Like full support for realtime redcine flow and output at 2K and just acceleration at 4K. Plus the same for premiere pro ala Matrox Axio style.I hope This new Nvidia card gets there.

It looks like the GeForce GTX 260 GPU. with a Displayport instead of the second DVI port.
1.5 GB GDDR3 insead of the 896MB GDDR3 installed on the GTX
but lower Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec) 76.8GB/sec insead of the 111.9 of the GTX

Both are CUDA ready, same number of processors 192 cores

CX 2000$
GTX 400$

I'm missing something?

optional SDI card on the CX not available for the GTX

I holding out to see what the new amd Firepro v8700 will do. 800 processors vs 192. Stream computing vs cuda. Stable Vista 64 drivers. Going to be interesting since the V8700 is expected to be 500.00 USD less than the CX.
Includes component out, no sdi option, does have displayport.

Michele, you are not missing much. The CX has a few minor hardware differences on the surface, such as the ability to use the SDI option and the genlock being the most obvious. The use of display port is neither here nor there as it's in the spec for either and part of various reference designs. That is up to the various GeForce card makers to implement if they desire or just stick with DVI.

Like current Quadro offerings (5600, etc..) there are GeForce line cards that have higher clock rates and faster memory bandwidth. But people pay the extra money for the Quadro to have the few minor hardware differences and there are some GPU differences as well. I don't know about the upcoming CX, if it will differ much (if any) in terms of GPU ops from the GeForce.

I'm guessing that it will differ for one or two obscure functions that most people don't need. Kinda like the GeForce vs. Quadro cards now... If you need a Quadro, then get a Quadro. 99% of the market does not need a Quadro. The problem is more for Mac people... They may be forced to buy the new Quadro just to get the upcoming CUDA support and other functions they may want to use with CS4 and the Apple Pro Apps. Because Apple has a habit of offering the top of the line card and then a low end card and nothing in between.

If only I had TIME to play with this new card sitting on my desk. :)

I will in a week or so. sounds fun.

That is going to be a beast!!!!.

Hopefully as both this cards will be available many other software will follow Adobe writing their code with GPU processing in mind.

By the way beeing a Mac user Nvidia seems to be a more solid choice for me.

10bit color depth output to the display port is the other feature that is being overlooked in the comparison to the GTX260. Otherwise, yes they are very similar. If all you are looking for is CUDA acceleration for CS4, then a GeForce card should be fine. I anticipate that NVidia will continue to limit 10 bit color support to their Quadro line for a while. I have a Q4600 so I am set for a while. The only reason I would consider upgrading, would be for 10 bit on a Dreamcolor LCD once there is widespread software support for it.

For sure it's the best future of this card

If all you are looking for is CUDA acceleration for CS4, then a GeForce card should be fine.

Looking at the specification should be even better and remember GTX260 is the basic GTX, but ther's also the more powerfull GTX280

The only problem with trying to use other Nvidia cards for the CS4 acceleration is that the cuda export is only supported on the quadro CX (something Nvidia must have done to restrict it), but the OpenGL acceleration should be good on any high end gaming or workstation card. I just wish Nvidia would allow for the Elemental Technologies encoder on the GTX 260 and 280.

HD-SDI board

HD-SDI board

Can someone please explain me, how the optional HD-SDI board works, and where one can find it on the official site?

I imagine it some sort of "doughterboard", that connects to the card via a special buss, and takes one slot for the outputs.

Thanks

I have one of the 2nd generation SDI daughter cards, that works with the 4600, 5600 and now the CX. It occupies a 3rd slot, has a dry PCI/PCIe connector at to bottom, and only interfaces with the GPU card via a small ribbon cable, and by looping one of the DVI ports OUT of the Quadro, INTO the Daughter card DVI IN. It then processes it and sends it out the 2 HD-SDI OUT ports, at 4:2:2, 4:4:4, or L/R Stereo, etc.

We are waiting on Apple...not Nvidia

We are waiting on Apple...not Nvidia

Its sort of a poorly kept tidibt that Nvidia has already turned over all the source code and materials for this card to Apple to write the driver:

Hopefully we'll see some action from Apple on this soon with an announcement by Apple at Macworld 2008 in January.

I hope CUDA will help adobe and other to support more GPU effects...Presently most of the supported effects help more the wedding video producer. There the first step. I hope light, blending, cc, motion blur and overall interactivity will be support as well. And also that the plugins developer will support that too...
