Dear Red User friends,

I have a client who wants to shoot some stop-motion Lego for a commercial on the Weapon.

I was wondering what the best shooting mode would be to get the easiest post-workflow.

We'd like to keep it at 8K is possible.

My guess is shooting stills locked off?

Thank you so much for your help!

Andrew

look in the operations manual under frame trigger. Short answer is go to the display and tap menu - settings - recording - change mode to frame trigger

When you trigger frames in video mode its assembled in that single file so its playable like any normal r3d motion shot. I've never done a stop motion shot so I can't tell you from personal experience but it should work just like time-lapse mode where it combines in into a single r3d motion stream. Kessler cinedrive and other motion control rigs can control this as well so incase you need movement its all handled by the system.

i would say go with a stills camera. easier to control for stopmotion from software like Dragon StopMotion - you can see the how much you moved stuff (ghosting/onioning), you have instant playback,...

Dragonframe is a must. You can actually use the software with RED cams, but you won't be able to to capture through the software - so it adds an extra step. You'd capture previews to the comp and then manually trigger the cam as per Chad's suggestions. Would really become annoying once you need to delete a frame.

A DSLR would definitely be much easier and still yield great results since you're capturing 4k/5K+ RAW stills, depending on your setup.

We shot this on an old 7D last year: https://vimeo.com/195658755

Yes, we'vs done stop motion several times and it works great. There's a mode for that. We tend to use 3 frame bursts. Having a way to remote trigger is helpful (Fool Control).

Nice work. The hair animation in the water is impressive. The feel of the darkness is also well done. Keep on the good work.
