Currently we do stop motion animation using a Canon XL2 DV camera piped in via Firewire to either Stop Motion Pro or Adobe OnLocation CS3 (CS4 dropped stop-motion capabilities).

We intend to buy a Scarlet 2/3" fixed kit. While we shall keep the XL2, we would like to be able to do stop motion with the Scarlet.

Stop Motion Pro only does SD, as far as I'm aware. OnLocation will do HD via Firewire. Does anybody have any good ideas about a workflow for doing stop motion with Scarlet? Will the Scarlet have a Firewire output that can send an HD preview?

Another alternative I'm thinking of is Frischluft Lensfeed inside After Effect, which allows bringing a live feed into After Effects (used often from green screen checking on location). But I can't think off the top of my head how onionskinning & the like can be achieved in this way.

Any help is, as always, appreciated.

All the RED cameras include animation / time-lapse record capability.

That's fabulous news. Will the animation capabilities of the Scarlet extend to an onion skinning feature? If not, it would be a nice thing to have, obviating the need for external software to achieve it.

I think only the Epic will have frame overlay feature ... One of the very few features Epic will have that Scarlet will not.

Careful with blanket statements like this.... You never what what EPIC will have versus what we have been told yet.
