The more I think about it, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to case a production truck with film gear. Just park your car and watch what cases leave the rental house, follow it to the lot and come back later. Or just hang back by a shoot and follow the camera truck home. If you wait till Friday, you'll get alot more low budget (re: low security) checkouts. It would be nice if someone had a list of truly secure lots in NYC (with cameras, armed guards, the works). Last feature I did on my Red, I took the body and glass home every night (unless it was a walk-away, insurance covers that). It was a real drag, but in the last two years, NYC has been getting quite a few high profile camera thefts. What really sucks is we'll all see the effects on our future premiums. If anyone knows a secure lot or trusted security company in NYC pass it on. What would be nice is if someone developed a portable ADT type system that you could rig your truck with.
Something tells me the rash of thefts in nyc are the work of a few outfits and/or inside jobs. A few recent big gear thefts in the city of both lights and camera were uncovered, revealing completely inside jobs by crew.
