I think we need a sticky for this thread "registered RED owners Theft Recovery Page" where everyone posts. Anyway.

I was looking to buy a RED epic dragon and came across an eBay sale for $18k for a brand new EPIC Dragon! The guy said he would take $15k! Comes with case and everything. I called RED with the serial number and its stolen! The case and camera look brand new so I wouldn't doubt it was stolen a year ago or more. The seller was hesitant to send over the pictures of the serial number.

*Please do NOT contact the store or create a mess yet, I want the owner to get this camera back* If you are the registered owner of this camera, message me.*

The store is S&M electronics in Bronx, NY. The picture and serial number is below.

I contacted RED and they won't get involved. Not even sure they would send my info over to the original owner. Makes me question being a RED owner. Thats why I hope we get a sticky thread about this.

red should at least contact the original owner right? let them know?

That seems crazy that RED wouldn't at least contact the true owner to let them know their stolen camera has been located. I have a hard time believing that can be true.

I definitely called RED two times and told them to contact the owner with my contact info. I have heard nothing back.

Amazing I gather they figure they can get the sale of a new one as the owner will need to replace. Not cool they will do nothing about it. Not even a little call to say check this out!

I seriously doubt that RED would be motivated to stay out of it as a way to encourage a potential sale. More likely, they might have to take such a position to limit their liability in a legal dispute. The seller may not even know it is stolen, for example. It's a legal issue in any case.

That said, I would hope that RED would contact the registered owner who'd reported it stolen.

What would be the point or benefit to owners for having a mandatory registration program, if not for things like this?

Similarly, if someone buys this kit, and goes to do an ownership transfer, then RED would be forced to get involved *after* someone got ripped off and the thief made off with the cash...

EXACTLY! We need this thread. We also need RED to contact this owner with my info so that he can get his camera back. I would be damned if I would be out $30k.

Totally agree.

My guess the owner must have already received money from insurance, and RED may have gone through this before. I wouldn't keep my equipments without an insurance.

This thread is a great idea... http://www.ebay.com/itm/272500292787?ul_noapp=true
I asked this user if a red ownership was available - no
if it still had a warranty - no
where did he buy it - pawn shop

I'm guessing this camera was stolen (especially with only 66 hours and costing 15K). I asked the guy for the serial number, but he said "it doesn't have it". I can't, in good conscience, buy a stolen camera. But if RED won't do anything about it, there is still a motivation for people to flip stolen cameras with no consequences down the road :(

I don't post that often but there is a lot of shady stolen RED gear out there it seems. It makes it hard buying used gear to be honest, having to constantly check and double check. Gear ownership transfer is FREE btw, so if people have not transferred it to their name then something shady is likely going on.
