RED #1605 was stolen from Columbia Square Stages (former CBS building) in Hollywood. It was taken at 10:30 pm Wednesday night, Jan. 28th from a locked control room. The lock was bashed off the heavy door to gain entry.

The last file transcoded that night establishes the time, we thankfully did not lose the drive, we also had a backup drive off premises.

The camera was fully built with an Angenieux 15-40, Arri MB-14, Arri FF2, 15mm ET plate, Oconnor 2060HD head with Cardelini/Mitchell Head-lock, Ronford/Mitchell heavy duty standard sticks. Also missing 3 power pack sets w/batts.

The setup is highly recognizable with the uGrip Firestore drive bay with battery plate mounted on top, there are two large thumbscrews on each side of the drive bay. Battery and drive were mounted.

Also missing is an 8 core Mac Pro Tower fully tricked out and 30" monitor, which is owned by Luis Flores, Big Lu on this site.
A 24" iMac, A full backup sound package and several personally owned digital cameras and lenses.

If anyone hears of any equipment being offered for sale please call:
Simon 310.877.3091.
Or Kelly at RED.

Thank you.

Thank you for your thoughts...

I have alerted RED concerning the number.
And yes, I too hope to find these "people".

As bad as I feel for my lose, I feel even worse for Big Lu, he lost a lot of work on his computer.

what the hell is with all the RED theft??? It seems another kit is stolen every week. NEVER LET YOUR EYES OF THE CAMERA!

Hi,

With 5000 cameras sold, one a week is not very many.

Can i just say this, I fucking hate theves!!! Go get a job you morons!

What really disturbs me about this particular theft is that it was from a location I would have considered secure.

If a camera is stolen from a car, one might infer some degree of carelessness, but a sound stage should have very good security. I routinely leave our kit in rented stages.

Think of the value of a complete package; could easily go into six figures, more than a typical bank robbery.

I would think we're on the verge of making this sort of malfeasance very difficult; embedded GPS that automatically alerts the owner if it's moved and updates the track for police. Sort of like the track packs banks use; it's activated when it leaves the building and pinpoints the crooks.

Is there room in the new Red cameras for such a device? I know that they are very small, can be hidden in a couple of bills.

How about it Red; any chance of making this standard or optional equipment?

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

You can do it yourself. Lojack is already offering a version for cases or equipment, (they cite laptops, but you get the idea)

Thanks for the words.

The thief has not stopped us, we were down for one day while renting, buying and borrowing more equipment which we remove from the building every night now... I'm sitting in the control room right now looking out at Alex Cox directing the quasi-sequel to REPO MAN called REPO CHICK.

It WILL be a fun flick.
Great cast as he always has.

´ve been told by an associate that an int'l task force was assigned by FBI, Intepol due to the large number of pro video gear being stolen during last years in several countries. Hope they succeed.

Back to 2002 we’ve lost a full ENG DigiBeta setup, including a brand new DVW-700WS camcorder w/ 11X4.5 wide-angle lens, Sachtler 30, Lectronics wireless, Sennheiser 816 shotgun, AB bricks & charger, PVM-8045Q monitor and other smaller stuff.

My partner Pete left the car unatended for 5 min by a 7-Eleven store while went inside to grab a bite, during day light in downtown Toronto's St Clair Ave. Time enough for the craps to grab everything from the back seat.
A security camera across the street had it on tape. Two "fellas" driving a Honda Civic used a spark plug to smash his Passat’s window. Checking the Honda’s license police found the car was stolen. It was found a week later, no signs of our stuff.

That was a major loss for our, young at that time, company. The whole thing was only 2 months old and we had its leasing to pay w/o having it working to generate revenue for.
Insurance tryied to screw us as much as they could, we’ve got paid almost 6 months later, after spending big bucks on laywer and tons of paperwork, phone calls.
I doubt we could get anything w/o the security video footage and the stolen Civic that was found later, we were just two youngmen and the adjuster even said to us “well, how can I be sure you guys haven’t paid two guys to get the job done. You would claim the loss, get the insurance money and sell the gear later to someone in the States...”. I had to hold myself not to punch his nose, and that would be a major issue for him as I’m 1.92m and 120Kg!

You’ll have my Viking eyes wide open in OT for you, BigLu, good luck getting your gear back.

Was the computer equipment also stolen in the same room that the camera gear was stored in? If so, were there any other thefts from that property?

To me, if the first question was a yes and a no for the second question, the theft may be an "inside job." Thinking about it (if this were the situation), to target that particular room, somebody should've known what was inside. And to add on to that it is a studio, I would be surprised if they didnt try to steal from other facilities.

But this is just my theory and I hope for the best in you finding your equipment. Im only a student in college and havent come across any REDs yet, but if I somehow manage to see your camera, I will let you and/or the community know.

The laptop lojack is somehow setup by software and probably won't work. What are the best options for something like this in the camera body itself? Cases can get ditched easily before you have time to track it.

Yes, the two computers taken were in the same locked room, everything taken was in the same room. It was the most secure area in the stages. Luis' Pro Tower was grinding out the transcode each night. The last file was at 10:33p, two hours after we left, that's when the computer was dismantled.

The other computer, a 24" iMac was in a Tenba Air Case against a wall near the door that was busted in. They first attempted a different door without success, it was in a hallway and would have been more visible and noisy. The door they busted was in a three door sound dampened 'airlock' into the stage area, or alternately, the control room, from the same hall.

The control room wall facing the stage has a double thick, sound proof window. The lights in the room were out, and it would not be easy to see what was in the room.

It looks very likely that it was an inside job as there was no forced entry into the building, only into the room. The heavy duty lock was chopped out of the heavy duty door... it must have made a LOT of noise.

Luis had put his boxes off on the side of the stage, in an area that they were not generally visible, the thief took the boxes too.

As I left the facility this evening, the Head of Security stopped me and told me, among other things, that they had never been robbed before. I don't know if i believe it. Apparently after CBS left for newer facilities, the building sat empty for a while and the copper wire running from controls to the grid were stripped out by thieves...

Certainly sounds like an inside job! At least with the forced entry you should have cast iron case for the insurance payout!

I don't care about the insurance, I want my camera back! It's a good one.
Also want every other item taken. Career tools for several people were removed, it sucks!

Simon

You're right. Wasn't trying to make light of the after effects of theft (I've been a victim more than once myself and it was not a good experience).

Eric, I didn't feel you were making light. I appreciate your concern and helpful words. Thank you, Simon

Lo Jack Feature in Epic/Scarlet

Lo Jack Feature in Epic/Scarlet

I would absolutely pay for some type of internal chip or device when upgrading to Epic that would allow me to locate my camera in the event of theft.

I'm sure others would also buy into that feature also. It's a no brainer and would also allow the criminals to be caught red handed and put in jail where they belong. Nothing worse than a thief.

Please make it so RED. We need this feature in Epic/Scarlet.

Best,
