Hey Everyone,

Was shooting in Oakland this last week and a bag was stolen from our set. In the bag contained a 14mm Canon CN-E Prime and 50mm Canon CN-E Prime along with a laptop, ipad and schnider 4x5.6 0.6ND. The theft happened at the West Oakland BART station on the north platform, (all trains headed to downtown San Francisco). If you are in the area please keep an eye out for these lenses or any of these stolen items. The lens serial numbers were: (14mm)#92810143 / (50mm)#93010576

If you can, please keep an eye out and help us track these down so we all can keep stuff like this from happening again. Thanks for your time!

-Chris

Sorry to hear that. Hope you find them.

I feel like I've read about a lot of thefts in the Bay Area over the last year or so. Cameras stolen at gunpoint in broad daylight downtown and an operator getting pistol whipped at the pier if memory serves correct, among other thefts. Anybody know why it seems to be so prevalent there?

That sucks. I'm sorry for your loss.

Basically the problem is:
High Crime rate PLUS one person on the Oakland police force to investigate burglary, robbery, and manage operations.

So you can rob someone, and there won't be anyone following up on it as long as you make a fast get away - Its the wild wild west!

Somewhat comical was the string of home burglaries in Oakland being committed by guys wearing nothing but boxers.
I only know this fun fact from listening to police scanners.
The suspects if caught would run,
throw on clothes hidden somewhere around a corner,
Then the police no longer had a description other then the perps skin color.

Before I helped them with a case, the Oakland PD's prior biggest recovery was an x-box (no joke).
In the last year or two they got federal money to help them out, but its still pretty bad.

BART, also has an extremely high robbery rate.
Especially at embarcadero, west oak, 12th, and 19th stations.
If you can avoid it, don't transport anything on bart.
And if you must, go with at least one other person and try to camouflage what you have.
Put a pelican case in a cardboard box. For smaller cases, use a paper bag.
Only take what you can hold and keep your eyes on it at all times.

You can blame the rapid gentrification of the Bay as a result of the tech industry boom. Many lower income residents (especially in Oakland) are being threatened by ever-increasing living costs, and with little or no oppurtunity for social mobility in their communities, they end up having to resort to crime to pay their skyrocketing rent. Sad but true. Developers and landlords are unregulated (often times foreign investors with no interest in the american people) and don't give a shit, so they just keep redeveloping and converting neighborhoods to appease silicon valley yuppies, making billions in the process. Eventually the previous residents will be priced out entirely and will move further outward to the suburbs, where the crime rate will double or even triple.

I shoot in the bay a lot and all I gotta say is be smart and discrete and have a good insurance policy.
