  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Stolen Camera - RED #1088

Sorry for your loss Chris!

this is starting to get so ridiculous that we almost need an "iPHONE APP" for this, so that a camera serial# can be checked on the spot when on any shoot and make sure that such camera is legit. If turns out stolen, BAM immediate knowledge!! BIt the S$#@! out of them and get the camera out to RED. Broken Leg or not, I would do that for a fellow REDUSER/Owner in a second.

I came across a lens in Israel once, hired from a very reputable facility, that had the serial no scratched off.

What lens? I had some lenses stolen from a hotel room in Jerusalem some years ago.....

Would be nice if somehow the RED firmware and software tools had a list of serials that have been reported stolen so that the software wouldn't work with footage from that particular camera and maybe "call" home if the machine it was running on was online (including the QT plugin).

Chris, what's the update on your status? Very sorry to hear about all of this

That's a pretty good idea to have the serial numbers coded into the firmware. I'm not sure how and how difficult or problematic that would be to implement but it might work effectively.

It's progressing slowly. Had some delay with my insurance as they had a bunch of claims the week I sent mine in.

Then all the items had to be "price checked" by a 3rd party. -- That was interesting to say the least. (FYI - It doesn't matter what you insure your equipment for, they only give you back what they think it is worth currently. (I.e. buy a Zeiss lens set at 60k, and it's now worth 30k, then you're only getting 30k back. And that "worth" varies depending on if you're going to replace it, or if they are).

I walked away okay from the above, but it wasn't quite equal to what I put into it.

What really sucks is that the individual/production company that stole our gear bought a full blown insurance policy to cover the loss. But his insurance won't pay the claim because they don't cover "fraud". So the Insurance Co kept his payment and won't pay out to us, forcing me to go through my insurance.

A number of close RED owner/friends donated their gear for a couple of our projects so we wouldn't lose ground, which was really cool of them.

Now it's just a matter of waiting until Epic ships so I can get my own camera back in my hands instead of renting.

it might be good to announce that lamebrain ins company so if we ever see a policy from them we can deny any rental...wait that sounds crazy they take his payment so indeed they carried a policy on the equipment and their client stole the equipment and now they reject the claim? wow...id get a lawyer on that asap

I've received a certified copy of the policy and I'm looking into the details. But this seems to be pretty much standard practice for most, if not all insurance companies. Just something to note for those unaware (like me).
