  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

stirring the 50-150 pot

We need to start a thread like the 18-50mm...'who has theirs'

Oh no! you have RED #904 and no 50-150 yet? Damn! I thought we were closer to my serial. I guess i will have mine around Christmas then...

Last month Craig Bowman received one for RED#214. So they are shipping for REDs somewhere above #214 and under #904.

I have to say that the specs on a few of the lenses are very similar to Sigma offerings. Sigma has a very good reputation in the still world and is often the next best choice after Canon's or Nikon's optics. I don't think Nikon would build lenses branded RED instead of Nikon. Nor I think, would Schnieder, Leica, Zeiss, Cooke etc., so yes, I think Sigma would be a good choice.

What really matters is the performance, and not the brand.

And for that matter..... what REALLY matters is the script! (but that's another subject).... :-)

My Red One is #508. Don't have my 50-150 yet. Want it badly, as I really need this range. I have been pretty happy with my 18-50; everyone who has seen both says that the 50-150 is nicer. Can't wait.

I also reserved the 18-85 (reservation number 354) back in 2006; for a long time it seemed as if Red wasn't going to make the 18-85 so I decided to order the 18-50 and the 50-150 when my Red number came up. When it came out that Red WAS going to make the 18-85, I decided to still buy the 18-50 and 50-150 because they were so compact; perfect for more "mobile" situations. I've been using the 18-50 with screw-in filters as Gibby recommended, and it's worked well.

Ok now were gettting somewhere!!

So Craig's 214 50-150 is at home, and Verko's 508 is not.

anyone in the 300's? don't be shy were all friends here....

So, is there no production schedule for the 50-150? Or are we all just speculating. Surely Someone must know for sure. Come on Red.com let's have the skinny!!!

RED will just refer us to Big Jon's sticky which says, "Backordered, shipping in limited quantities with production ramping up." That's why we have to talk amongst ourselves, to try to get an idea of when this lens will ship....

I am wondering about "production ramping up" -- it doesn't seem to be ramping up, they still seem to be releasing very few of these, if we haven't even made it to the 300s, since Craig posted. Or have they? Who knows?

I could sure use this lens....there's not really anything else like it, for the size and range (and, of course, price....)

One way to find out with the Sigma rehousing thing is to compare the color rendition of the RED 18-50 with a) the Nikon 17-55 DX (with cardboard or matchsticks or one of the in-development G mounts) and b) the Sigma 18-50 DC with the same test and lighting setup, at the same time, with the same white balance set. Many sigmas are criticized for having a slight yellowish cast to them versus the cooler Nikkors.

Or we could always rip the two apart and compare the optics.
While I'm a fan of the Sigma 18-50, I find it hard to believe that RED would go for that lens to rehouse...IMHO, it's great for the price but not a superb lens. While it would help keep the costs down, RED never really comes to mind as anything less than superb stuff for a better price.

There's already been a thread involving someone's Red 18-50 which dropped and broke open, you can search for it... They took the opportunity to notice that the Red lens had a different number (more) optical elements than the Sigma 18-50 does.

I've already had the opportunity to overhaul a RED 18-50mm.
I can't seem to find the thread where a lens "cracked open"...
Can anyone provide a link.

Unfortunately i didn't subscribe to that thread but i did read it a while back. It did say that when pulled apart the internals are different to the sigma. Personally, i think it's probably a 'mongrel' lens that has a number of components from different lenses. I don't really know, just throwing theories up there, as is everyone else unless RED tells us or someone can prove otherwise. And if no on can show proof, well, it's ALL specualtion in my book.
Main pioint...nice lens at a this nice price range.
But where oh where are the damn 50-150mm lenses!

Well I guess that settles the re-housed Sigma theory. But Sigma still seems like a good choice for designing and building cine lenses. I think it could be a win-win for RED and Sigma. RED gets very high quality branded lenses and Sigma gets into the movie business in a respectable way.

What iritate's me the most is the 18-50 isn't a true 18-50 but 17.5-45mm ish. Its a diffference you can see.

I did have the chance to to see 50-150 #1 at LART and looks feels solid.

I just hope it a true 50-150 not 47-143.....

Maybe it's old news/rumor, but my lens tech thinks it's Sigma done by Optex, or what/who was once Optex, in the UK.

Bzzz, I lose. Come play again...
