Just trying to gauge where we are in the shipping.

Anybody care to share? I would love to see other BTS pics or footage
from anyone generous enough to share their experience with this elusive beast.

This is the last piece to the Red puzzle for me!!

Hi Shawn. Can you provide more info on that. 72mm? I though the 18-50 had a 114mm front.

Alex,
The filter thread is 72 or 77 but the Hood is 114 for a mattebox doughnut.

David

Hope you are well.

Red Sigmas

Red Sigmas

I think the Red lenses are re-wrapped Sigma's, so if you want to test before you buy throw them on a Birger, see how how they stand up.

No one really knows who is making these lenses except Red. I have had people from a major filter company, a lens company, and others in the business all saying it was Nikon or Minolta or Sigma. Most say Nikon. My guess is that I don't know and I don't really care. Red lists Cooke as one of their suppliers and no other lens company. One of the executives at Schneider was adamant that the 18-50 was Nikon. Or made by Kinji. Does it matter? Both of the Red Lenses serve several purposes. They are both great little lenses when you consider their size, weight, clarity and price. I have had some lightweight zooms built by the "majors" and they were fair at best and cost 13K. The 50-150 is a terrific lens. A steal at the price Red is selling it for. I don't think we will figure out the source of these lenses. One thing all of us can agree on is that the Red employees know how to keep a secret. Wasn't NAB a bomb? None of us expected the Epic. F

That's quite a complement coming from someone who knows what he's talking about. Care to elaborate?

Hi,

As Sigma makes lenses with identical specifications to the 18-50 & 50-150 and Nikon don't . A trip to a photo store will also confirm how similar the front of the 2 lenses are. By deduction it's fairly obvious the source.

Stephen

I don't think they are Sigma lenses. this has been discussed MANY times before and one person even said when there's was stripped down the internals were different.

Besides my 18-50 has a big MADE IN U.K. written on it! And whom is a lens maker in the U.K., hmmmm Cooke! But really, don't have a clue and don't care!

We need to start a thread like the 18-50mm...'who has theirs'

Hi,

Go into a local photoshop and look at the Sigma 18-50. The rehousing is done in England. The lettering on the lens matches Cooke but thats where any similarities end.

Stephen and i have different opinions on many topics - but the 18-50 looks indeed extremly similar to the sigma 18-50 and also shares a lot of the parameters as weight, size, f/t-stop etc.

However it remains speculation.

What i am confused about is the RED 18-85 and the primes - can these lenses be pre-ordered?

Well it's all just speculation isn't it. Unless RED confirm anything at all it's just it looks like this, works like this, done by them, etc etc. Frankly, no one knows except the lads at RED. I was told that lenses are hand made and that is why they are taking soooo long in getting the 50-150mm out, and that was from RED. If they were just rehoused lenses they wouldn't take anywhere near as long, also, you cannot change a lens mount and stamp "MADE IN UK" on it. Well, except for cars and a million other things. I just speculated COOKE, could have been 'Joe's lenses and kebabs' around the corner from 'Big Al's 4K cameras and nasal probes'

Hi,

The reason the 18-85 has not seen the light of day or the prime set is that custom made lenses take a lot of work to get right.

They did not just change the lens mount & stamp made in the UK, they re housed the optics, very difficult & expensive to do properly.

Hope that's right, looking to hook up with the Prime set one day.

No pre-ordering right now (afaik). Reservations for the 18-85 were taken back in 2006. Due to popular demand reservations opened again in Jan. 21-24th 2007. The prime set could be reserved in April 2007.

how many of you have ordered the 50-150?
