  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Stills from RED...

Justin/Ivan - that is a great, great shot - LOVE that triangle bokeh in the 1.4!

Some truly inspiring work in this thread. Hopefully I'll have a RED of my own soon

can someone answer this for me, im a newbie with motion-

but how do you get a sharp image with about 50th of a second? with stills, i need to keep the shutter above 250 for a sharp image with all but the most static subjects.
can you get good footage with a red at higher than 50th of a sec? doesnt the footage get choppy?
or cant you expect to shoot good stills at the same settings as moving stuff?

cheers paul

The camera is usually on a very stable tripod, and you pick your frame with care so there is no motion blur in that particular frame.

As to the second question it depends on the movement in the frame as to wether a higher shutter speed will produce an acceptable movement of your subject and what is your desired effect. the individual frames will be sharper for the same amount of subject or camera movement which may or may not be desirable. In some action sequences this can look more exiting.

This is made in Photoshop from a 2K @ 125fps footage, f4.0 1/1000s. This athlete, Janne Ahonen, is one of the legends in skijumping and this was his last jump when he retaired from jumping .... well later on he came back and he is still there ...

Shades of Edweard MuyBridge! Red DSMC is opening a whole new range of creative possibilities with still/motion composites. Nice work Lauri. I'm very much looking forward to doing some similar experiments with a Scarlet. One can only imagine doing similar shots at 5k with an Epic.

I actually thought you shot this scene as is... Great shot in the end.

This brings up the question, is Jim asking for stills from the .r3d or just of footage shot on R1?

i think it's pretty open ended. i think the intent is to show that RED can make beautiful still photographs, but i think there is some leniency to just show beautiful captures.

i really like this thread and the beautiful, diverse range of images we're seeing. i wish we had started it sooner. thanks to everyone who is sharing!

Here's some from last project in Scotland & French... And some from QQ.com CF tvc as well... All Shot with MX

If stuff moves under 180 degree shutter, it doesn't stay sharp. But you don't want it to. Motion blur is part of what makes films look like real motion. You keep the background sharp by using a tripod or some other form of stabilization, and keeping pans and other camera movement very slow and steady.

Shooting at a high shutter speed makes it look like you are watching everything under a strobe light, it feels kind of disorienting. The most famous example of its use is the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan.

paul, i think you're specifically referring to still photography. remember that you can shoot pretty high shutter speeds, or shorter exposures. you aren't required to shoot 180 degree shutter. there are ways, as sam mentioned to get around that in some ways.

also, yanne - that picture of the building at night is beautiful.
