  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Stills from motion...

Congratulation for achieving this, especially the first one.

The new Leica lenses ROCK! But so does EPIC...

Jim

Thanks Jim.

Let them dance together (Epic + Leica S2 lenses should be every professional photographer a dream gear)....

Why?

A professional photographer can "extract" stills from 120FPS Epic shots with the highest quality optics available today on the market.

It's about building an ultimate still + motion digital camera system with the best lenses available that will become a combo rig every serious professional photographer can desire and want to work.

Talked to the photographer... it is cross processing. A look.

Jim

Too many pixel peepers here ... these are great images in that they are psychologically interesting.

I see his use of green light as deliberate to offset the tattoo.

And the second pic such a radical change of drama from one side of her face to the other ... once again to offset the tattoo.

Well thats my interpretation anyway

Hair look noisy at certain patches. Though, not sure if that is just my eyes, or my laptop's screen? Perhaps some demosaic errors? Is this image 18-bit DR?

Am I correct that this EPIC test was with the 'Stills' feature and not an individual frame captured from motion? If these images were captured as stills, can you tell us how they would differ from a graded image exported from RAW motion? Is resolution and color space comparable? What sort of RAW image are you originally capturing in 'stills' mode?

Personally find the sharpness of the first image pleasant. Somebody raised a term "natural sharpness" already some time ago, and the R1 has trained my eye to seek for this kind of natural sharpness.

When look at the photos of my wildlife still photographer colleagues get often the feeling they over sharped their images. Found even the BBC Planet Earth Blue Ray version over sharped. Especially the arm in the first image creates the feeling of this kind of natural sharpness.

Looks like a nightmare shoot  - I guess it's a hard life and someones got to do it :-)

Epic looks Epic Jim... Congratulations.

Thank you for sharing some of the fun ;-)

All the best,

Jim, it's so cool that you have such a passion for cameras of all kinds, and so much experience/knowledge with still photography ... being from OC, the Oakley company and visuals are especially legendary around here.

And because of the high standards and experience -- on both formats -- I have a feeling the Epic (and future Red camera variations) will be shooting some of the best digital cinema and still images anyone has ever seen.

Actually, we're already getting a nice taste of that :-)

I'm nothing but grateful for every image, sample and update you post :thumbup1:

Beautiful shots.

Pretty noisy. Must have pushed it a good bit from 800, especially for the second shot.

I must say that is the most organic noise I have seen from a digital camera.

The greenish tint is present in both shots and on her hair though, looks more like that's how it was lit rather than a problem with how the camera perceived it

I absolutely agree, both tints complement each other and therefore I also believe it was intentional lighting.

Not everything unusual we see has to be a mistake ;-)

Nice camera BTW, what you said it´s name was again?

PS: as for Sanjin´s wish for a Leica S mount. Jim was referring to Leica PL glass in his reply, while a future Leica S mount could probably turn up as a 3rd party product.

Nice.

Interesting tattoo.

I must say that is the most organic noise I have seen from a digital camera.

i think it´s just compression noise what you see, jim may tell us more, but i wouldn´t be surprised when the original 5K footage is noiseless.

Reality Check

Reality Check

The more tests we see,
the closer we are to having
EPIC in our possesion. So any test
(especially good test) are welcome.
This is truly awesome. Awesome.
Seeing landmarks while running a marathon is always
a good thing. Thanks for the ramp and constant new updates.
Congrats and Thanks Jim (Marathon Man) for finishing.
