Hey guys...shooting in Arizona was a trying time for Red #321. I had temp warnings everyday...even with a courtesy shade on the camera all the time and using ice packs....but everything worked out.

Shot 4K 2:1 24 FPS....used the Rosco IR - worked well along with my Schneider NDS and a 138mm pola on all the time for the exteriors to get my stop down to a 4/5.6.....thanks to everyone who offered help and advice....especially to Joelnet who tried to get me a 1.8 ND....got buried in the schedule and had no time at all...sorry Joel!

Couchgarden is an existential heist picture about the search for paradise on earth....yeah it's a little out there. We had mostly small HMIs, mirrors and reflectors.

Just a little C.C. on these - mostly just the S-Curve...

Adrian,

Are your lenses in BNCR mount? If so, whos mount are you using?

No Chuck, had them converted to PL early last year...I was not sure that a BNCR mount would be available...and I really didn't want to have to switch mounts on set between the primes and my zoom.

Like the grabs...

I'm all ears on the heat. It was 105 degrees in Las Vegas yesterday. What was the ambient temp on location in AZ? Sounds like you got a Warning but continued to shoot with no issues?

kept shooting...temps were in the area of 105 to 112....never had any issues in terms of shutdown.....I was just paranoid about possibly damaging the camera. I called Red Tech and they walked me through some scenarios and I felt a lot better about shooting in the heat.

I checked the footage shot with the warning on - and there are no issues...so that was a relief as well.

has a little bit of a "LOST" look to it. Good stuff :)

I've been keeping gel packs on the camera as much as possible and that usually eliminates the warning. I've tried a 18" external floor fan on the camera in 100ish shade and that didn't eliminate the warning without a gel pack. The air is just too hot I think.

I don't think I've ever had a problem recording that I could correlate to heat. I did a 15 minute take with a body hot warning once and it was all there in post.

Does the camera shut down to protect itself at some point?

@Adrian: Don't you know RED can't do saturated looks? Nice work. :-)

I was actually told that the camera would shut down if it got too hot...so I calmed down sufficiently to keep shooting...so much steadicam on this that I didn't want to waste time taking the rig apart to cool the camera in the RV....fans didn't work for me either! I think you're right....the air was just too hot.

Actually Joel, the director wants to up the saturation even more!

Hey Adrian, That looks really awesome! You said you did most of this look in camera and only added curves? Was the look your choice or the directors choice how did you come picking out this look. Did you use a LUT? Again awesome job!

Nice Frames...used two REDS for a project in the Middle East for 10 days recentley average daily temp 104 and Humid in our locations.
Both cameras performed fine.

The one thing that Robert Scott Wildes (the writer/director) talked about was a saturated look, contrasty with very specific framing. I chose the gold bounce for kickers and backlight to visually accentuate the search for paradise on Earth that all the characters are searching for...our crew was really small - 5 total for camera and G&E so it was a careful balance between moving as fast as possible and trying to maintain our visual template.

Robbie is going to AFI in the fall, and there is a good chance that I will not be able to be around for the C.C. so I wanted to get as close as I could with the lighting in camera so that the integrity would be maintained.

Couchgarden is definitely not reality....it is almost like a day-glow graphic novel....those themes dictated the look. A sort of hyperreality with comic book tones. There is a ton of camera movement, stuff shot off of boats, planes, out of jeeps on dirt roads...about 35 steadicam shots....for a twenty-five minute short....it way pretty ambitious.
