r3d trim tool and save as r3d files.

I first had this discussion with Stuart English in Oct. 2007.... and it seems every few months with RED management and the REDCine (whatever version...) software team (Deanan, Rob, +) ever since... the answer has always been "it's coming", "we'll have it soon", "we want it too!", etc.....

SO -> after three years - when?

Sincerely and with great respect for RED and the RED Team - I know you have a lot of the plate and calender, but this has been needed for a very long time.

Wait, what? Is it possible to set in and out points on a clip before exporting with RedRocket? Or do we have to export the whole thing?

Ditto :)

At RED DAY in LA (February '10) Rob said "soon" when asked when we would get R3D trimming... that's six months ago now. I'm wondering what he's been working on since he hasn't had the time to finish up on the trimming. It must be big :-)

Epic? You want that too, right? :)

Just because I love you guys so much I'll let you know it's in alpha right now (and no, we don't need more testers ;) )

Just out of curiosity.. What's the big technical difficulty?

Many things surprisingly!

Hey Rob, is there any chance the re-writing of R3D files ability will be incorporated into the SDK at some point? I'm under the impression/assumption that this will be the case so that we can include trimming in our own apps. But more than just trimming, it would be nice to be able to re-write R3D files with modified metadata. As an example, I'd love to be able to create "fixed" R3Ds where someone inadvertently recorded in varispeed mode for a specific frame rate instead of selecting the proper project rate. Too many NLE softwares are brain-dead and won't let us alter frame-rates without processing or retiming, but if the metadata or clip can be re-saved with the proper changes made, it would solve several post issues we go through now. Like rendering the clip out to a frame sequence and importing that...

...Just wondering. And yeah, Epic first!!! :)

Can easily set in/out for exports, this is talking about trimming R3Ds so you can just send relevant frames rather than an entire clip.

In RedCineX, just use the /-> <-\ icons in the viewer to set in and out. Your exports will only be those frames.

Wait, what? Is it possible to set in and out points on a clip before exporting with RedRocket? Or do we have to export the whole thing?

Jeff: yes to both, but rewrite of metadata etc. will not be in the first release

Hi Rob,

thanks for the update. Jeff's comments and requests would be great..... but as noted would love to see (at this point) a 'basic' -> save r3d feature. It would really help the inhouse storage and deliverables for us.

Cool! Thanks, Rob. And yes, have to agree with Clark on the importance of an R3D trimming ability in RC-X!
