First, I wish the red.com site would answer these basic questions I'm about to ask, because I've been on this forum for a long time and I'm still confused! How about a FAQ? This forum is great, but way to dense to find anything quickly. I've been working with Red One for over a year.

So, my confusions:

What are the feature differences between Epic X and Epic S?
Exactly how many models are there right now, and in what order of features and capabilities do they fall?
Is the S35 Brain in stage 4 an Epic, or something else.

I know Red is a fluid company, but I'm finding it all a bit hard to follow.

For EPIC, there is EPIC-M, EPIC-X and EPIC-S.

EPIC-M and EPIC-X are the same, just the M model is hand-assembled with some machined (rather than cast) components and it comes at a higher price. Available now while we wait for the EPIC-X production to start up. M also only comes in a specific package. You buy it, you get the 5: touch LCD, EVF, 4x128GB SSD's, titanium PL mount, side handle, REDMOTE and a custom-foamed Pelican 1510 case to fit it in.

EPIC-S is a lower-spec'd model, but RED hasn't given us final specifications. It's going to look the same, have the same 5K sensor, etc.. But it's not going to have as much internal processing power, meaning that it won't support the same frame rate options and possibly not all the same compression ratios. Otherwise it's going to be the same camera and I would imagine that it will shoot 5KFF @ 24fps 5:1 compression just fine, same as EPIC-M or X.

EPIC-S35 is the same way of saying EPIC-X. Originally the X model was going to be the special version for Stage-2 & 3 upgrade people, but other than the X label, it was no different. I think RED has dropped the S35 moniker and all will just be X now. The S model was originally branded the Scarlet S35, but they made it an EPIC. This makes sense -- keep Scarlet as 2/3" models and EPIC as the S35 sensor models. Helps avoid some confusion. EPIC-S was briefly called "EPIC-Lite" for a few days, but people didn't go for it, hence it then became EPIC-S.

Very helpful thank you! Any chance you could sticky a moderator only thread at the top of this forum with the information you just wrote, and update and change it as needed? What you just told me I'm sure could be gleaned by sifting through tons of outdated posts, but having solid, up to date official information at the top of the forum would be immensely helpful, not only to me but to people new to Red as well.

Thanks again!
